The Second Hospital of Shandong University is located in the northern part of Jinan, the City of Springs and a well-known historical and cultural city. It is under the direct management of the National Health Commission and directly affiliated to the century-old Shandong University. Adhering to the creed of "relieving the public by providing extensive medical assistance, and seeking truth via continuing study" of Qilu Medicine and following the hospital motto of "protecting people's lives with utmost virtue and kindness", the Hospital has been pioneering with the pursuit of innovation and excellence. In 2011, it became the first Grade III Level A hospital in China to pass the new evaluation standard. In 2019, it was selected as one of the first member units of National Regional Medical Centers jointly established by the ministerial and provincial governments. In 2020, it was selected as the Regional Medical Center in Shandong Province, which is all evidence of its increasingly enhanced demonstrating and guiding role in the region. The Hospital has been constantly expanding its business, and has formed a strategic development pattern of "one hospital and three wings", including the central wing, the southern wing and the northern wing. The Hospital has been actively participating in the reform of the medical and health system, and has taken charge of the operation of Jinan Shande Nursing Home. It is the first to put forward the concept of "Integrated Eldercare Services with Medical Care" in China, and has been awarded as one of the first demonstration units of Integrated Eldercare Services with Medical Care in Shandong Province. It is the co-founder of the Shandong Linglong Yingcheng Hospital, the first private Level 3 general hospital in Shandong Province, which has become an important medical force in the east of Jiaolai River. The Hospital has been promoting the construction of the integrated health care system, and has assisted and cooperated with more than 40 community-level medical institutions. It has been managing Shandong University Hospital, and working to promote the accessibility of quality resources and help community health service centers to play a better role.
The Hospital has nearly 4,000 staff members, including 17 academicians (part-time chair professors of Shandong University), Changjiang Scholars and Taishan Scholars and other high-level talents. Precision diagnosis and treatment of lung diseases and endoscopic diagnosis and treatment of gastrointestinal neoplasms are the Hospital’s high-quality provincial clinical specialties. The Laboratory Medical Center was ranked among the top ten in China and top five in East China in the China's Hospital Specialty Reputation Ranking List (by Fudan University). Infection and Rehabilitation Medicine were ranked among the top five in East China. Seven specialties were ranked among the top 100 in the “Science and Technology Evaluation Metrics List of Chinese Hospitals”, including Otorhinolaryngology & Head and Neck Surgery, Urology Surgery, Plastic Surgery, Burn Surgery, Oncology, Hematology and Emergency Medicine.
Enhancing advantages in diagnosis and treatment services with kindness and outstanding medical skills. By putting patient in the first place and centered on quality and safety, the Hospital has been working to improve diagnosis and treatment skills and services, and has significantly enhanced comprehensive strength. It owns "six centers" including provincial and municipal chest pain center, stroke center, trauma center, critically pregnant and maternal treatment center, critically ill children and newborn treatment center, as well as cancer center. It is equipped with the most advanced fourth-generation Da Vinci surgical robot in the world, the first imported mobile stroke unit in the province, the first orthopedic robot used in provincial-level hospitals in Shandong, the most advanced Perfexion head gamma knife, PET-CT, 3.0 magnetic resonance imaging, gemstone CT, mobile cabin CT and other high-tech devices. It is at the leading level in China or in the province in such fields as autologous liver transplantation, orthopedic robot surgery, major cardiac vessels hybird, comprehensive intervention treatment of tumor, minimally invasive interventional treatment of gallstones, pediatric incontinence, 3D printing bionic reconstruction, minimally invasive treatment of gynecology tumor, diagnosis and treatment of breast tumor, minimally invasive treatment of urinary tumor, diagnosis and treatment of gastrointestinal tumor, minimally invasive treatment of thoracic conditions, treatment of contagious liver disease, digestive endoscopy, renal transplantation, the treatment of hand, foot and joint diseases, treatment of premature infants with an extremely low birth weight, cochlear implans, and anesthesia ultrasound visualization. Every year, it undertakes more than 100 projects under the National Natural Science Foundation of China, with a total project funding of more than RMB 50 million Yuan. It has concluded agreements with medical and research institutions in Sweden, the United States, Canada, Japan, Australia and other countries to continuously expand international exchanges and cooperation.
Fulfilling the function of medical education through morality cultivation. As a national demonstration center of clinical teaching and training, the Hospital has been undertaking the task of clinical theory teaching, clinical internship and apprentice teaching for nearly 1,000 people from more than 10 medical colleges and universities inside and outside the province. As the second clinical college of Shandong University, it has 49 doctoral supervisors, 135 master supervisors, 23 doctoral degree programs and 32 master degree programs, covering 17 second-level disciplines and 32 third-level disciplines. As one of the first standardized training bases for resident doctors in China, it consists of 25 professional bases that accommodate more than 500 people, and the passing rate of residential training completion examination reaches 95%. As the clinical teaching base of Shandong higher medical colleges and universities and clinical teachers’ training base of hospitals in Shandong Province, it is responsible for the training of clinical teachers in all clinical teaching bases of the province. It has provided training for 675 clinical teachers in 11 sessions, covering 78 clinical teaching base hospitals in 17 cities in the province. As the national clinical pharmacist training base, it has been undertaking the task of providing training for key pharmacist staffing engaged in pharmacy services in county-level hospitals.
Fulfilling the original mission of public hospitals by undertaking programs for public good. Medical workers in the Second Hospital of Shandong University have been working hard to meet the needs of the country and the people. The Hospital responded to the call of the country and sent eight batches of national medical teams consisting of 162 medical workers to assist Hubei Province in fighting the pandemic, making its own contribution to winning the war of pandemic prevention and control. It has been actively participating in counterpart assistance and health and medical assistance programs for poverty alleviation at the national, regional and university level. It has successfully completed the health support programs in Xinjiang, Tibet and some foreign countries, and provided help and support for more than 10 county-level hospitals in Zizhou County of Shaanxi Province, Huachi County of Gansu Province, QueShan County of Henan Province and several other counties within Shandong Province including Yishui County, Gaoqing County, Qihe County and Dongping County. It has explored a way of offering medical support with its own characteristics, and received the "Accurate Counterpart Support Contribution Award" granted by the National Health Commission. It has been actively carrying out activities for public good. The initiative of “Bringing light to patients with cataract and curing patients with malformed hands and feet” has become a public welfare brand, with its footprint covering Kashi area of Xinjiang, Haidong of Qinghai Province, Zizhou County of Shaanxi Province and old revolutionary base areas in Shandong in five years. The team has performed over 1000 free surgeries for patients with cataract, extremities deformity and cerebral palsy, and was awarded with the title of "best healthcare giver and best medical team" of the province. With continuous deeds of kindness, the Hospital is well recognized by the public as “a hospital full of warmth".
With new branches growing in the old trees, a new chapter is to be opened.
