Founded in 1997 by Prof. Yuan Kuifeng, the Stomatology Department of the Second Hospital of Shandong University has become a specialty with unique features, distinct academic style and high reputation in and out of Shandong Province attributing to the unremitting efforts for nearly 2 decades. In 2003, the Department was qualified to enroll Master Degree Candidates.

Medical Members

The Stomatology Department has divisions including oral outpatient, oral and maxillofacial-head-neck surgery ward, cadre healthcare outpatient, etc. The Department currently has 20 members devoted to medicine, teaching and research, including 2 master supervisors, 1 professor and 2 associate professors. Members at middle and young age below 45 years old account for 90%, and all doctors have a doctoral or master’s degree. 1 of them is a postdoctor.

Among the middle-aged and young doctors of the Department, 2 are associate professor and 1 is a returned student. The academic leader and master supervisors have multiple steady research directions and cultivated more than 10 masters. Many of them have won honors and awards, including the Outstanding Science and Technology Worker of Shandong Province.

Clinical Medicine

The Stomatology Department is now divided into four specialty groups of oral

and maxillofacial surgery, oral internal medicine, prosthodontics and orthodontics.

In the field of oral and maxillofacial surgery, the Department is at domestic advanced level. It has carried out various complicated dental implants, and free flap repair of maxillofacial defect, angioma (vascular malformation) and other interventional therapies early in China and firstly in Shandong Province. In recent years, the specialty group of the oral and maxillofacial surgery has carried out in-depth, meticulous and characteristic study of “endoscopic oral and maxillofacial surgery” and “3D printing-guided precision oral and maxillofacial surgery” with good social benefits.

The Department is at domestic advanced level and provincial leading level in periodontal and endodontics treatment, and has applied tunnel technique of mucogingival surgery early in China and firstly in the province. It is also at provincial leading level with techniques such as microscopic periodontal treatment, aesthetic periodontal surgery, microscopic endodontics treatment and aesthetic endodontics repair, and is now preparing for pediatric oral treatment under general anesthesia.

For prosthodontics, the Department has taken the lead to carry out minimally invasive oral aesthetic repair, personalized abutment implantation and oral aesthetics DSD techniques on the basis of traditional repair techniques including removable denture, fixed denture, inlay, porcelain full crown, prosthesis, etc. Image processing software is used to aesthetically analyze and design patients’ face and teeth, to precisely simulate the therapeutic effects in a digital manner, and finally achieve the oral aesthetic repair effects by overlay and full crown and such other prostheses.

In respect of orthodontics, the Department relies on the world leading teeth appliances, and invisible teeth appliances such as ceramic brackets, Invisalign appliances, and self-ligating brackets to provide high-quality services for patients. The alignment techniques available at present include removable appliance, edgewise appliance, straight wire appliance, functional appliance and implant anchorage at domestic advanced level.

 

Scientific Research Level

The Stomatology Department has undertaken nearly 20 research subjects of the state, the province, the ministries and the commissions with total research grant exceeding RMB 1 million Yuan, published over 50 papers on domestic and foreign journals, won 1 national, provincial and ministerial science and technology progress award, and edited or co-edited 3 books, demonstrating its strong strength and good conditions in scientific research. The academic leader Prof. Yuan Kuifeng is a famous oral and maxillofacial surgical specialist in China, and M.M., professor, chief physician and master supervisor of Shandong University. The Professor concurrently serves as the director of Stomatology of Second Hospital of Shandong University, the standing director of Shandong Stomatological Association, the vice director of Branch of Maxillofacial Surgery of Shandong Medical Doctor Association, the standing committee member of Branch of Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery of Shandong Stomatological Association and Dental Implantation Branch of Shandong Medical Doctor Association. The Professor is also a National evaluation expert of Science and Technology Rewards，Shandong Provincial Expert of Science and Technology Plans and Results Review, Shandong Provincial Expert of  Malpractice Appraising and Shandong Provincial Expert of Health System Review. He once went to USA, Germany, France, Japan, South Korea, Beijing, Shanghai, Taiwan and other countries and regions for study.

 

Academic Exchange and Cooperation

The Stomatology Department has successively dispatched 4 experts to UK, USA, Germany and South Korea for advanced study, and presided over, attended and made speeches on world, international and domestic academic conferences. The Department has successively invited many experts from UK and other countries for academic exchange, through which, good cooperative relations are established and academic development is promoted. 。
