Being identified as a department to be constructed with high attention in the hospital, the First Department of Gastrointestinal Surgery of the Second Hospital of Shandong University is the member department of Shandong Provincial Construction Project of General Surgery Clinical Key Specialty and the National General Surgery Training and Standardized Training Base. It now has 2 chief physicians, 1 associate chief physician, 2 attending doctors and 2 resident doctors, amongst whom, 1 is a master supervisor from Shandong University. All members of the Department have a master’s degree or above. The Department is characterized by gastrointestinal surgery, laparoscopic minimally invasive surgery, hernia and abdominal wall surgery as well as surgery of abdominal emergencies, and is professionally equipped with HD laparoscope, JNJ Ultracision Harmonic Scalpel, bedside abdominal ultrasound instrument, duodenoscope, fiber choledochoscope and such other advanced instruments.
In each year, the First Department of Gastrointestinal Surgery would receive and treat about 1,000 patients. Patients from the province and all over the country have been attracted to come to the hospital specially, and obtained good treatment effect, which produces a high influence of the department inside and outside the Province. Gastrointestinal surgery, laparoscopic minimally invasive surgery, and hernia and abdominal wall surgery are the characteristic and advantageous specialties of the Department. The Department now has considerable experience and effective therapies for the diagnosis and treatment of gastrointestinal diseases, hernia and acute abdomen, and is at a leading position in the Province and produced certain influence to a certain degree in China. It can skillfully carry out pancreaticoduodenectomy, radical resection of gastric cancer, carcinoma of colon, and rectal cancer, and tension-free hernioplasty in a standardized manner. It takes the lead in the Province to develop laparoscopic radical resection of gastric cancer, laparoscopic radical resection of colorectal cancer, laparoscopic hernioplasty and hyperthermic intraperitoneal chemotherapy and such other highly difficult technologies leading in China or even on the world stage, and has obtained good treatment effects. In 2013, the Department was selected as one of the provincial top 10 key specialty construction project units by the Health Commission of Shandong Province. The Department has won the Hospital New Technology Award and the Rescue Success Award for Difficult and Critical Cases for many years.
The Department leader Prof. Zhang Jianliang is the Master Degree Candidate supervisor of Shandong University, the academic leader of general surgery and laparoscopic surgery, the director of Professional and Standardized General Surgery Training Base, and the director of Surgery Teaching and Research Office of the Second Hospital of Shandong University. At present, the Professor holds posts of associate director of Hepatobiliary Surgery Branch of Shandong Medical Doctor Association, deputy chief of Hepatic-biliary-pancreatic Group of Shandong Provincial Medical Association, and vice director of Editorial Board of Chinese Journal of Current Advances in General Surgery relying on his unique insights in the treatment of malignant tumor, including liver cancer, gastric cancer, carcinoma of large intestine, pancreatic cancer, and cancerous goiter. He is also skilled at various common laparoscopic minimally invasive surgeries and enjoys reputations in the Province as the first one to carry out laparoscopic radical resection of gastric cancer, Laparoscopic radical resection of colorectal cancer, laparoscopic hernioplasty and such other minimally invasive surgeries in the Province with good therapeutic effects. Furthermore, the Department has engaged the provincial famous expert Prof. Li Zhanyuan for long-term clinical and teaching guide. Prof. Li Zhanyuan once served as the direct of General Surgery of Shandong University Qilu Hospital and the vice director of Shandong Provincial General Surgery Association. He has accumulated abundant experience in the diagnosis and treatment of general surgery diseases and made outstanding contributions to the development of general surgery in Shandong Province.
The Department attaches great importance to scientific research and teaching and undertakes many national, provincial and ministerial projects with total research grant exceeding RMB 300,000 Yuan accumulatively. The Department has published many papers on domestic and foreign journals, won two 2nd prize and one 3rd prize from the provincial departments, and edited many books such as the Practical Pancreatic Tumor Surgery and Modern Oncology Surgery, demonstrating its stunning strength and good conditions in scientific research. The Department also emphasizes teaching. The Department leader Prof. Zhang Jianliang is the director of the Professional and Standardized General Surgery Training Base and the director of Surgery Teaching and Research Office of the Second Hospital of Shandong University, who has cultivated more than 10 Master Degree Candidates. In 2006, the Department was approved as an Advanced Department of Clinical Teaching in the Hospital. The Department is currently responsible for 3 education reform projects of Shandong University with the grant approaching RMB 100,000 Yuan.
The Department members have gone to Canada and other countries for advanced studies, presided over and made speeches on many national and provincial academic conferences. A number of experts from countries like Canada were invited to the hospital for academic exchange. In such a process, amicable cooperation relations are established and academic development is promoted. Meanwhile, the Department is enhancing cooperation and exchange with grass-root hospitals by sending many members to local hospitals in Shaanxi Zizhou, Shandong Dongping and Zhaoyuan for assistance to promote the development of local medical undertakings.
