Founded in 1997 by Prof. Bi Jianzhong, a national famous expert, the Neurology Department of the Second Hospital of Shandong University has become a specialty with unique features, distinct academic style and high reputation at home and abroad and outstanding contributions to the development of neurology in China attributing to the unremitting efforts of two generations. The Department was granted with the rights to award the master’s degree and the doctoral degree in 2000 and 2006 respectively. In 2003, it was approved as a characteristic specialty "for treating senile dementia" and "Shandong Provincial Youth Civilization". In 2004, it was rated as Ministry Of Health Clinical Pharmacology Base. In 2010, it was identified as "Shandong Provincial Model Department of Medical Quality" and "Shandong Provincial Key Discipline of Medicine and Health". In 2012, it was selected as a Key Discipline of Shandong Province. In 2011, Shandong University Neurology Institute was founded and in the same year and was approved to establish the Neurodegenerative Diseases Translational Medicine Laboratory-a key laboratory of colleges and universities in Shandong Province during the "12th Five-year Plan". In 2012, the Department was identified as a mobile postdoctoral station. The Neurology Department has divisions including outpatient, ward, ED, ICU, and special neurological examination department, and 153 beds.
Medical Members
The Neurology Department currently has 42 members devoted to medicine, teaching and research, including 3 doctoral supervisors, 3 master supervisors, 6 chief physicians and 11 associate chief physicians. The young and middle aged members below 45 years old account for 68%, and all doctors have a doctoral or master’s degree.
The Department has selected multiple steady research directions and set up the Neuropsychology and Dementia Sub-specialty Group, Cerebrovascular Disease Sub-specialty Group, Epilepsy and Sleep Disorders Sub-specialty Group, Neuroimmunity and Infection Sub-specialty Group, Severe Neurological Disorders Sub-specialty Group, Neurogenetic Degeneration Sub-specialty Group, Neuromuscular Diseases and Peripheral Nerve Disease Sub-specialty Group. Since its being approved as a mobile postdoctoral station in 2012, the Department has cultivated 1 postdoctor, 26 doctoral and 47 master candidates.
Clinical Medicine
The Department is at domestically advanced level in the neurology field, and has certain strengths in the clinical and scientific research of neuropsychology and dementia sub-specialties, especially Alzheimer disease and great influence in China. Prof. Bi Jianzhong, a doctoral supervisor, has made remarkable achievements in the fundamental and clinical research of Alzheimer disease, developed a competent team and become one of the famous academic leaders in this field in China. In 2003, the Department obtained the approval to set up a characteristic specialty for the treatment of "senile dementia".
In recent years, each sub-specialty group has developed vigorously to increase their influence. 12 sub-specialty outpatients have been set up to manage cerebrovascular disease, epilepsia, sleep, neurogenic diseases, neuroimmunity and infection, dizziness, headache, disseminated sclerosis, memory, Parkinson’s disease, Parkinson’s disease and dementia and diagnosis and treatment based on integrative Chinese and western medicine. All sub-specialties are attended by experts from the related fields to treat special diseases in a professional manner.
The Cerebrovascular Disease Sub-specialty Group consists of a stroke center and a sound green channel of stroke, and is equipped with domestically leading mobile stroke unit to carry out interventional thrombolysis of acute cerebral infarction, thrombosis removal, stent molding, etc. The Department has been approved to construct the "National Model Stroke Center" as a key support project of the Second Hospital of Shandong Province during the "13th five-year planning" and has undertaken the “application and popularization of standardized technical therapeutic regimen for acute phase of cerebral apoplexy" under the Grassroot Enhancement Program Popularization Project of Health Department of Shandong Province and Training Class of Standardized Diagnosis and Treatment of Sleep Disorders and Cerebral Apoplexy, the Shandong Provincial Appropriate Health Technology Popularization Project. In 2021, the Department successfully passed the review of Construction Expert Committee of Stroke Center of Shandong Province Stroke Prevention Engineering Committee, and became the construction unit of an Advanced Stroke Center, thus establishing the academic position of the Cerebrovascular Disease Sub-specialty Group in the Province.
The Epilepsy and Sleep Disorders Subspecialty Group has set up the Video EEG and PSG Monitoring Center of the Second Hospital of Shandong University, which is equipped with 12 video EEG and PSG devices and 2 central workstations. The Sub-specialty Group has set up epilepsia specialist outpatient and sleep disorder specialist outpatient, established the Video EEG and PSG Monitoring Training Base of NICOLET Second Hospital of Shandong University and organized the "Training Class of Latest Progress in Standardized Diagnosis and Treatment of Sleep Disorder" and the “Study Class of Latest Progress in EEG and PSG Monitoring” as a Provincial Secondary Medical Education Project.
The Severe Neurological Disorders Sub-specialty Group has 39 beds and can provide basic monitoring and treatment for severe patients with neurological disorders, including monitoring and treatment of patients with severe cerebrovascular disease, severe encephalitis, severe epilepsia, severe immune diseases, and neurogenetic degeneration terminally ill patients, and applies techniques such as continuous video EEG monitoring, Noninvasive intracranial pressure monitoring, bedside transcranial Doppler monitoring, etc.
The Neuroimmunity and Infection Sub-specialty Group has set up nerve infection and immunity specialist outpatient and disseminated sclerosis specialist outpatient, established the Cerebrospinal Fluid Room of Neurology to carry out cerebrospional fluid cytology and infection common pathogens test of central nervous system and taken the lead in the province to carry out modified acid fast staining, Alcian blue staining, CrAg test, and neuroimmunity projects.
Scientific Research Level
The Neurology Department has undertaken over 60 research subjects of the state, the province, the ministries and the commissions, including presiding over 1 National 973 Plan prophase research special project and 1 National 973 Plan prophase research special subject, attending 1 National 863 Plan subject, and 1 National "11th Five-year Plan" Science and Technology Support Program Subsidiary Subject, and hosting 6 subjects of the National Natural Science Foundation of China, and total 3 Science and Technology Support Program Sub-center Subjects separately in National "11th Five-year Plan", "12th Five-year Plan" and "13th Five-year Plan", the 973 Plan Prophase Research Special Project "Fundamental Research of Common Diseases in Ethnic Minority Areas and Regions in China(2009CB526500)" was awarded with a total research grant of RMB 8.9 million Yuan. Prof. Bi Jianzhong of the Specialty served as its project coordinator. Over 60 published papers have been published and included in SCI, more than 10 scientific research awards from the province and ministries have been granted, and more than 10 books have been completed by the Neurology Department as the editor-in-chief or co-editor, demonstrating its strong strength and good conditions in scientific research.
As a famous neurologist in China, the academic leader Prof Bi Jianzhong concurrently serves the a member of the Neurology Branch of Chinese Medical Association, the director of Chinese Geriatrics Society, the director of Chinese Stroke Association, the vice director of Brain Healthcare Special Committee of China Aging Well Association, a standing committee member of Neurology Special Committee of Chinese Association of Integrative Medicine, a standing committee member of Medicine & Healthcare Integration Promotion Committee of Chinese Geriatrics Society, a member of Neurologist Branch of Chinese Medical Doctor Association, the vice director of Neurology Branch of Shandong Provincial Medical Association, the director of Cerebrovascular Disease Branch of Shandong Provincial Medical Association, the vice director of Stroke Prevention and Control Branch of Shandong Preventative Medical Association, the vice director of Neurology Special Committee of Shandong Association of Integrative Medicine, the vice chairman of Shandong Association for the Study of Geriatrics, the vice director of Neurologist Branch of Shandong Medical Doctor Association; the standing committee member of the editorial board of Journal of Shandong University (Health Science), the member of the editorial board of Chinese Journal of Integrative Medicine on Cardio-/Cerebrovascular Disease, and the reviewer of J Alzheimers Dis.
Academic Exchange and Cooperation
The Neurology Department has successively dispatched 6 Experts to Sweden Karolinska Institute Neurology Research Center, USA Yale University School of Medicine, USA Cleveland Clinic Epilepsia Center, USA Emory University School of Medicine, USA NIH Neurology Office, USA Massachusetts General Hospital Harvard Medical School and such other schools for advanced study and presided over, attended and made speeches on world, international and domestic academic conferences. The Department is also actively engaged in international academic exchange. It has repeatedly invited Doctor Dilys, the director of WHO Asia-Pacific Stroke Rehabilitation, Prof. Davis from USA New Mexico State University, Prof. Mark S. Kindy, the director of Neuroscience Institute, Medical University of South Carolina, USA, the director of Stroke Research Center, and the director of Spinal Cord Trauma Research Center, Prof. Robert J.aumann from USA Kentucky State University, Prof. Jin Peng from Emory University, Prof. Caplan from Harvard Medical School, and Prof. Keith Szulwach from Emory University to the Department for academic exchange. The Department has appointed Prof. Robert J. Baumann as the visiting professor to carry out academic exchange regularly. It has actively cooperated with the Dementia Research Center of Sweden Karolinska Institute, invited Prof. Bengt Winblad, the director of the Dementia Research Center of Sweden Karolinska Institute and other professors to visit the Hospital, and successfully convened “The 1st Shandong University- Sweden Karolinska Institute Dementia Special Forum” and "Sino-USA Neural Stem Cells and Degenerative Diseases of Nervous System", through which, good cooperative relations are established and academic development is promoted.
