The Second Department of Anesthesiology of the Second Hospital of Shandong University, established on October 1, 2013, is a second-level clinical specialty integrating clinical practice, teaching and scientific research. Currently there are 31 professionals in the department, including 2 chief physicians, 4 associate chief physicians, 12 attending physicians, 7 resident doctors and 6 anesthesia nurses. All the physicians have a master's degree or above, including 4 doctors and 5 studying for the doctoral degree. Among them, the young and middle aged anesthesiologists under the age of 45 account for 90%. This is a young, energetic and united team with the courage to shoulder responsibilities and fight uphill battles, and they were successively awarded with the honorary title of "Youth Civilization of Shandong University" in 2015 and 2020.
In clinical practice, adhering to the dual concepts of "safety first, service as the priority" and "medical quality as the core, perioperative vital function regulation as the focus, and scientific management as the link", the Second Department of Anesthesiology has been actively developing new technologies and new services, striving to complete the anesthesia of every operation with high quality and efficiency. So far, its service scope covers clinical anesthesia, perioperative pain treatment, emergency resuscitation, critical patient monitoring and painless diagnosis and treatment and other clinical fields. In scientific research, it has led and completed 5 provincial and ministerial level projects and 3 department and bureau level projects, published more than 20 SCI papers and more than 30 papers at National Medical Journal of China[A1] , and worked as the editor-in-chief and co-editor in the compiling of many books, thus demonstrating its strong scientific research strength. In teaching, the Department now has 4 supervisors for postgraduate students from Shandong University and 16 teachers for resident trainees, and has won wide and positive recognition in postgraduate teaching, standardized training for resident doctors and continuing education.
The Second Department of Anesthesiology has 18 operating rooms, all equipped with the most advanced high standard laminar air purification system, including three 100-level dust-free rooms, one hybrid operating room for both interventional surgery and open surgery, one DSA operating room, 2 rooms for integrated thoracoscope, as well as 6 rooms for surgery teaching and demonstration. There are 10 beds available in PACU. The operating rooms and PACU are both equipped with international advanced anesthesia devices, ventilators, monitors, ultrasound machines, video laryngoscope, fiber bronchoscope, blood gas analyzers, defibrillators and other medical devices. The operating rooms are further equipped with Asia's most advanced RGS730 angiography machine, TiRobot and DAVINCE Xi robot, Covidien Force Triad, Johnson &Johnson ultrasound knives, Lumenis PowerSuite, EMS ultrasonic ballistic crusher, endoscope crushers of Shenyang University, plasma cutting machines, Lumenis tissue destrustors, electronic cystoscopes, electronic ureteroscopy, Olympus endoscope, STORZ endoscope and ventriculoscope, nerve electrophysiology detector, choledochoscope, Smith&Nephew arthroscopy, Stryker power systems, Zeiss microscopes, Leica microscopes, GE C-arm fluoroscopic units, Siemens C-arm fluoroscopic units, Medtronic gas drill, Valleylab CUSA ultrasonic suction system, Aesculap power system and Xishan power system, all of which provide platforms for clinical departments to carry out all kinds of challenging surgeries.
The Second Department of Anesthesiology is mainly responsible for the clinical anesthesia, emergency resuscitation, intensive patient monitoring and pain treatment in surgical departments including gastrointestinal surgery, colorectal and anal surgery, thyroid and pancreas surgery, traumatic orthopedics, spine surgery, plastic surgery, hand/foot and ankle surgery, urology surgery, renal transplantation, pediatric surgery, hepatobiliary surgery, neurosurgery, breast surgery and cardiovascular surgery. More than 15,000 operations are performed each year. Under the active cooperation of The Second Department of Anesthesiology, the first autologous liver transplantation operation in Shandong Province was carried out in 2018, various complex orthopedic robotic surgeries were carried out in 2019, and the Da Vinci robotic surgery was carried out in 2020.
Professor Zhao Xin, the Director of The Second Department of Anesthesiology , is the Vice Director of the Anesthesiology Branch of Shandong Provincial Medical Association, of the Anesthesiology Branch of Shandong Society of Geriatrics, of Shandong Anesthesia Quality Control Center, and of the Anesthesia Treatment Specialty Committee of Research Hospital Association of Shandong Province, the Member of the Regional Anesthesiology Group of the Anesthesiology Branch of Chinese Medical Association, the Standing Committee Member of the Anesthetist Branch of Shandong Medical Doctor Association, and of the Anesthesia and Analgesia Committee of Integrative Medicine of Shandong Province. Led by Director Zhao Xin, the Department has been attaching great importance to the implementation of new technologies and new projects while maintaining an integrated development of medicine, teaching and research. A remarkable number of doctors have been sent to top hospitals at home and abroad to receive training, including Yale university in the US, St George Hospital in the UK, Peking University People's Hospital, West China Hospital, Sichuan University, the Sixth People's Hospital affiliated to Shanghai Jiao Tong University.
The Department was the first in Shandong Province to apply ultrasonic visualization technology in the peri-anesthesia period, and has been leading the way in anesthesia development of Shandong in terms of ultrasound-guided regional nerve block technology and intraoperative transesophageal ultrasonic monitoring technology. As the training base of anesthesia ultrasonic visualization of Shandong Anesthesia Quality Control Center and Perioperative Visualization Technology Training Center, it has carried out a number of ultrasonic visualization technology training programs in the province, and has received positive comments from participants. As a member of the National Alliance of Geriatric Aesthesia, through ultrasound-guided regional nerve block and TEE monitoring technology, it has formed its own characteristics in anesthesia management for patients with complicated and refractory diseases and with critical conditions, thus enjoying high reputation inside and outside of Shandong province.
