Founded in 1997, the Orthopedic Surgery of the Second Hospital of Shandong University, with the national famous expert Prof. Wang Ji’e, as the first director, has formed a specialty with its own characteristics and academic style, and enjoys a high reputation at home and abroad through the unremitting efforts of two generations. Now, it has gradually developed into the Traumatic & Orthopedic Surgery headed by Prof. Gong Mingzhi and other specialty departments, which has made outstanding contributions to the development of the specialty of orthopedics in China. The Traumatic & Orthopedic Surgery of the Second Hospital of Shandong University, founded in September 2013, majors in acute and chronic traumatic diseases of the motor system, including complex fractures, muscle vascular nerve injuries, multiple diseases of neck, shoulder, waist and leg pain, as well as orthopedic tumors, osteoporosis and other diseases. It is now a master's degree awarding point and is rated as a key discipline of Shandong Province.
Medical Members
Currently, there are 18 medical, teaching and research staff, including 1 doctoral supervisor, 3 master supervisors, 1 professor, 2 chief physicians and 7 associate chief physicians. The young and middle aged members below 45 years old account for 80%, and all doctors have a doctoral or master’s degree.
One of the middle-aged and young doctors in the Department is promoted to associate professor as an exception. The Department has sent doctors to support the relief and gratuitous treatment activities held at the boundary of Shaanxi Province and in seismic poverty-stricken areas and remote areas in Shandong Province. In July 2016, the Department selected some capable members to assist the People’s Hospital of Zizhou County, Shaanxi Province for 1 year as its response to the call of the National Health and Family Planning Commission. The Department has a reasonable talent echelon and solid technical strength. In 2017, an associate chief physician of the Department joined in the 17th national medical team of assistance to Africa and was assigned to Seychelles. In 2019, three members were arranged to the People’s Hospital of Zizhou County, Shaanxi Province, People’s Hospital of Gaoqing County, Zibo City and People’s Hospital of Qihe County, Dezhou City for 1-year counterpart support. The Department members have mastered the basic skills of treating fractures, bone tumor and traumatic diseases. The academic leader and doctoral supervisor have multiple steady research directions and have cultivated 9 doctoral students and 14 master students. Many honors and awards, including the Outstanding Science and Technology Worker of Shandong Province, have been garnered.
In the field of orthopedic surgery, the Traumatic & Orthopedic Surgery is in the international advanced level and domestic leading level. The department is one of the first in the world and in China to carry out robot-assisted orthopedic surgery, apply Piezosurgery in spine surgery, and adopt minimally invasive treatment for osteoporosis fracture. In 2019, the Department accomplished the first robot-assisted screw fixation for scapular-coracoid process fracture and minimally invasive surgery for axial fracture in Shandong Province, and has applied the two national new technologies of robot-assisted closed reduction technique for unstable pelvic fractures and advanced core decompression with bone graft to treat osteonecrosis of femoral head in early stage. As well as, the Department has applied the provincial new technology of minimally invasive screw placement in pelvic channel and sacroiliac screw surgery. Since the introduction of orthopedic robot in the end of 2018, the Traumatic & Orthopedic Surgery has performed nearly 100 robot surgeries, and demonstrated its significant advantages and accumulated abundant clinical experience in robot-assisted minimally invasive pelvic fracture surgery and internal fixation with femoral neck channel screw
In recent years, the Department has carried out in-depth, meticulous and characteristic study of bone trauma, bone tumor, microscopic surgery, pelvic and acetabular fracture, multiple fracture, complex intra-articular fracture, and large segmental bone and soft tissue defects, and achieved remarkably in the application of Piezosurgery in traumatic spinal surgery. In terms of hip and knee artificial joint replacement, limb extension and arthroscopic repair technologies related to cervical, lumbar and thoracic injury, vertebra fracture shaping, joint trauma in hip and knee arthritis and senile femoral neck fracture, it is in the leading level in Shandong province. Among hospitals in the Province, the Department is the first buyer of Italy Piezosurgery, which is safe and minimally invasive, and has accomplished hundreds of difficult and high-risk thoracolumbar spine and cervical spine surgeries.
Scientific Research Level
The Traumatic & Orthopedic Surgery has undertaken more than 10 research subjects of the state, the province, the ministries and the commissions with total research grant of about RMB 2 million Yuan. Among these research subjects, one is at the national level, 10 are at the provincial level, over 10 are at the bureau level and 4 are national patents. The Department has published nearly 50 papers on domestic and foreign journals, won three national, provincial and ministerial awards for science and technology progress, and edited or co-edited more than 10 books, demonstrating its strong strength and good conditions in scientific research. The academic leader Prof. Gong Mingzhi is a famous orthopedic surgery specialist in China, who concurrently takes almost 20 posts in domestic and foreign academic organization. The Professor is a member of the 1st Session of Shandong Provincial Alliance of Famous Doctors, the Bone Branch of Shandong Provincial Medical Association, the vice director of Emergency Trauma and Geratology Branch of Shandong Medical Doctor Association, the standing committee member of Osteoporosis Branch of Shandong Society of Geriatrics, the vice director of Spinal and Spinal Cord Injury of Shandong Medical Doctor Association, and the vice chairman of the Provincial Trauma Alliance Care Center.
Academic Exchange and Cooperation
The Traumatic & Orthopedic Surgery has successively dispatched 2 experts to USA and Germany for advanced study, presided over and attended and made speeches on many international and domestic academic conferences. Furthermore, the Department held 2 sessions of academic conferences on the minimally invasive treatment of osteoporotic fracture in recent years, which were attended by more than 400 audiences. It also invited a number of experts from Australia, Canada and USA to the hospital for academic exchange, through which, good cooperative relationship is established and academic development is promoted.
