The Transfusion Department of the Second Hospital of Shandong University is a comprehensive discipline that integrates medical treatment, teaching, and scientific research. It is a Member Unit of the Clinical Transfusion Management Committee of Shandong Provincial Transfusion Association, a Member Unit of Shandong Provincial Expert Committee of Transfusion Quality Control, a Deputy Director Unit of the Clinical Transfusion Branch of Shandong Medical Association and a Deputy Director Unit of the Clinical Transfusion Branch of Shandong Medical Doctors Association.
According to the needs of discipline development, in 2002, the blood bank of the Second Hospital of Shandong University was separated from the Laboratory Medicine Department and reorganized into the independent Transfusion Department. With the support of hospital leaders and the unremitting efforts of the department staff, it has gradually developed into a characteristic department with a complete and scientific management system of clinical blood transfusion.
Medical Members
There are currently 11 staff members in the Transfusion Department, including 1 associate chief technologist, 2 transfusion doctors, 7 laboratory technicians, 1 laboratory associate technician, and 1 nursing worker. Among them, there are 4 masters.
Clinical Medicine
The business scope of the Transfusion Department includes: (1) forward and reverse type of ABO, RH blood type and grouping, cross matching (Micro-column Gel Test, Polybrene Test, Anti-Human Globulin Test), irregular antibody identification, Coombs experiment, prenatal blood group antibody detection. (2) It carries out blood component transfusion to improve the quality oftransfusion. The proportion of blood component transfusion has reached more than 99%. (3) It carries out the collection and preservation of autologous platelets during the perioperative period to avoid cross-infection related to transfusion. (4) It carries out thromboelastography testing, and guides clinical reasonable transfusion and adjust treatment strategies of antiplatelet drugs. (5) It is responsible for the preservation and query of blood transfusion files. (6) It participates in the review and consultation of clinically difficult blood transfusions and large amounts of blood use, and coordinates the blood use and discussion of new clinical techniques and new surgical cases.
With “Safe Transfusion, Reasonable Transfusion, Scientific Transfusion, and Effective Transfusion” as the quality goal, it has established a perfect transfusion quality management system, including “Quality Manuals, Procedural Documents, Rules and Regulations, Operating Procedures, and Record Forms”. It has adopted advanced transfusion management software and realized the informationalized management of the whole process from the blood storage to the completion of the blood transfusion, which makes the clinical transfusion management formal, scientific and standardized, and greatly improves the safety and work efficiency of transfusion.
Scientific Research Level
While ensuring the safety of clinical transfusion work, the Transfusion Department encourages employees to carry out scientific research activities. It has published many academic papers in core journals at home and abroad, of which 5 papers have been included in SCI. It has undertaken 1 project of the Natural Science Foundation of Shandong Province and 1 project of the National Health Commission. It has participated in the editing of 2 books. The current main research directions of it include rare blood type, accidental antibody screening and identification, transfusion-related epidemiological investigation, transfusion management and quality control, etc. At the same time, as a teaching unit, the Transfusion Department also undertakes further training for the personnel of lower-level units, as well as teaching trainees from Taishan Medical College, Weifang Medical University, Shandong Medical College, and other colleges and universities.
Prospect Forecast
Transfusion medicine is an emerging discipline that is gradually developing. It involves many medical fields and intersects with many medical disciplines. It has a relatively broad development prospect. In the future, we will continue to work hard, forge ahead, develop precision transfusion, and lay the foundation for more efficient and safe transfusion therapy.
