Since founded in 2005, the Geriatrics Department of the Second Hospital of Shandong University has now become a profession with its own characteristics, academic style and high reputation nationwide. It is a comprehensive department integrated with medical treatment, healthcare, medical teaching and scientific research. It is also an influential healthcare base in the Shandong province with outstanding contributions to the development of Shandong province's geriatrics profession. It was identified as a granting unit of master’s degree in 2015. It is also the member of China Geratology Special Committee, Northeast China Geriatrics Center Alliance, Shandong Provincial Geriatrics Special Committee, Shandong Institute of Cardiac Function, Experts Consultation Committee of Shandong Provincial Healthcare Committee, and the general practitioners training base of Health and Family Planning Commission of Shandong Province, and the standardized training unit of residing doctors.
The Geriatrics Department, with a building area of about 600 square meters, has outpatient clinic, ward, intensive care unit and other institutions. The Healthcare Clinic which contains internal medicine, surgery, gynecology, stomatology, otolaryngology, rehabilitation, pharmacy, and infusion room, is equipped with GE large abdominal ultrasound system, Philips IE33 cardiac color ultrasound system, eletrocardiogram, ATMOS ENT comprehensive diagnosis and treatment workstation, and the integrated dental chair, all of which make it possible to provide one-stop services of diagnosis, treatment, blood sampling, medicine receiving and transfusion.
Medical Members
The Department now owns total 16 members devoted to medicine, teaching and research, including 2 with the senior title, 2 with the vice-senior title and 11 doctors. The young and middle aged members below 45 years old account for 85%, and all doctors have a doctoral or master’s degree.
Clinical Medicine
The Department is at a leading position in geriatrics field in Shandong Province, and has carried out in-depth, meticulous and characteristic study of geriatric multiple organ failure, geriatric cardiovascular diseases, and geriatric cerebrovascular diseases in recent years with outstanding achievements in geriatric multiple organ failure. The Department is also responsible for the healthcare of provincial cadres, and has participated in the healthcare mission of central government leaders coming to Shandong for inspection and various large-scale meetings each year.
Scientific Research Level
The Geriatrics Department has undertaken 6 research projects of the province, the ministries and the commissions in succession with total research grant of RMB 1 million Yuan. It has published over 20 articles on domestic and foreign journals, won 3 Provincial Science and Technology Progress Awards, edited or co-edited more than 10 books, demonstrating its stunning strength and good conditions in scientific research. The academic leader Prof. Jiang Weidong is a famous specialist of cardiovascular diseases, who concurrently serves another 2 posts in other academic organizations and the reviewer of the specialty journal.
Academic Exchange and Cooperation
The Geriatrics Department has sent 2 experts to USA for advanced studies, presided over, attended and given speeches on many domestic academic conferences related to this specialty.
It also invited many experts from USA and other countries to the hospital for academic exchanges, in which way, good cooperation relations are established and academic development is promoted.
