Founded in 1997, the Cardiology Department of the Second Hospital of Shandong University has become a specialty with unique features, distinct academic style, obvious regional advantages and high reputation at home and abroad under the leadership of Prof. Wang Shuchun and Prof. Lu Qinghua, who are national famous experts in cardiovascular disease, and attributing to the unremitting endeavor of the two generations, and has made significant contributions to the prevention and control of cardiovascular diseases in China. The Department was granted with the rights to award the master's degree and the doctoral degree in 1997 and 2011 respectively and identified as a clinical pharmacological testing base in 2005 and Shandong Key Clinical Specialty in 2011. The year 2013 witnessed its being approved as a key laboratory of vascular physiology and treatment of medicine and hygiene in Shandong Province. In 2015, it was admitted to Shandong Chest Pain Center Alliance.
The Cardiology Department has divisions including Outpatients, Wards, Emergency Treatment, ICU, Cardiac Catheterization Room and Special Cardiac Examination Room occupying a building area of about 2,500m2.
Medical Members
The Department currently has 41 members devoted to medicine, teaching and research, including 1 specially invited "Taishan Scholar", 2 doctoral supervisors, 2 master supervisors, 9 professors and 6 associate professors. Members at middle and young age below 45 account for 33%, and members with a doctoral or master's degree account for 95% of the total number of members in the Department.
Attributing to its attention on the construction of talent echelons, the Cardiology Department has formed a comparatively sound three-level (senior, intermediate and primary) diagnosis and treatment echelon, and focuses on the capacity building related to clinical diagnosis and treatment and scientific research. It makes efforts to strengthen the department talent training, especially young doctors. At present, the Department has remarkable advantages in technical echelon, which provides powerful technical support to its long-term development.
Clinical Medicine
Overall, the Cardiology Department is at domestic leading level in Cardiology. It takes lead in China and Shandong Province to engage in treatment technologies such as interventional treatment of complex coronary artery diseases through radial artery, radiofrequency ablation of arrhythmias such as atrial fibrillation and premature ventricular beats (PVB), implantation of CRTD (Cardiac Resynchronization Therapy Defibrillator) and chemical ablation of hypertrophic obstructive cardiomyopathy (HOC).
So far, the Cardiology Department has established all subclinical cardiovascular specialties including CAD/percutaneous coronary intervention (PCI), cardiac failure, hypertension, arrhythmia, pace-making and electrophysiology, hyperlipidemia, critical cardiac conditions, and structural heart disease (SHD). All these subclinical specialties are staffed on a full-time professional team undertaking the responsibility elaborately, which greatly improves their technical and theoretical level.
The Department is mainly characterized by interventional diagnosis and treatment of complex CADs, and has formed significant technical strengths covering the whole of Shandong Province and influencing other provinces around. Its features in the interventional diagnosis and treatment of left main coronary artery diseases, bifurcation lesions and chronic total occlusion （CTO）are distinct, and the total annual cases of CAD intervention ranks the forefront in the province. In terms of the diagnosis and treatment of acute myocardium infarction, the Cardiology Department has established sound green channel for emergency treatment and round-the-clock emergency CAD intervention team, which can maximally accelerate diagnosis and treatment with less links and improve the success rate of acute myocardium infarction treatment.
In respect of heart failure, the Cardiology Department has always been keeping pace with international leading level to standardize its treatment and diagnosis. It has been engaged in technologies such as bedside hemodialysis ultra-filtration, invasive/noninvasive hemodynamic examination, intra-aortic-balloon-pump (IABP) and assisted mechanical ventilation to greatly improve the success rate of acute and critical heart failure treatment. In respect of chronic heart failure, the Department has established a sound chronic disease management system to effectively guide patients for treatment in and out of the hospital. Therefore, the overall survival rate and life quality of patients are improved, which had a certain influence throughout the whole province.
In case of complex arrhythmia, the Department can provide treatment services based on electrophysiology, radiofrequency and diagnosis technology. It has remarkable advantages especially in atrial fibrillation and ventricular arrhythmias.
Scientific Research Level
The Cardiology Department has successively undertaken nearly 20 research subjects of the state, the province, the ministries and the commissions with total research grant exceeding RMB 2 million Yuan. It has published over 60 papers on domestic and foreign journals, won 6 technological progress awards from the state, the province, the ministries and the commissions, and presided over or participated in the compilation of more than 10 books, demonstrating its stunning strength and good conditions in scientific research. In recent years, the Specialty has carried out in-depth, detailed and characteristic study of the mechanism of atherosclerosis and restenosis, the relationship between extracellular matrix remodeling and left ventricular remodeling, the relationship between pathologic angiogenesis and atherosclerosis, the role of vascular adventitia in atherogenesis, the relationship between cardiovascular remodeling and target organ damage in hypertension. Its study in the role of vascular adventitia in atherogenesis has drawn high attention from domestic and foreign scholars particularly. The academic leader and famous expert of interventional cardiology, Prof. Lu Qinghua concurrently serves as a member of ASE, Cardiovascular Committee of Chinese Medical Doctor Association and Branch of Electrophysiology and Pace Making of Shandong Provincial Medical Association, a vice director of Shandong Provincial Committee of Cardiovascular Diseases, Intervention Branch of Shandong Medical Doctor Association and Shandong Preventive Medical Association Cardiovascular Disease Prevention Branch, and a director of Shandong Geriatric Research Society Cardiovascular Disease Committee, as well as an editorial board member of journals of Copyright Sessions of China Medical Association.
Paying attention on academic exchange and cooperation, the Cardiology Department has conducted technological cooperation with many domestic famous and superior hospitals of cardiovascular diseases to improve communication, theoretical and technological progress. The Department has also established an exchange and cooperation mechanism with many foreign medical institutes, dispatched a number of experts to USA and other countries, and invited to China the famous scholars of the USA, Sweden, Canada and such other countries for academic exchange. In such a process, amicable cooperation relations are established and academic development is promoted. The Department presides over and participates in many international and domestic major academic conferences and gives speeches each year.
