Profile of the Clinical Pharmacy Department of the Second Hospital of Shandong University

The Clinical Pharmacy Department of the Second Hospital of Shandong University, established in April 2018, is mainly responsible for guidance and evaluation of rational drug use in clinical practice, medication consultation, adverse drug reaction monitoring, and administration of clinical pharmacists, as well as pharmaceutical teaching and scientific research. The Department has been dedicated to providing the public with high quality, highly effective and convenient pharmacy services, and continuously meeting the increasing health care needs.

 The Clinical Pharmacy Department consists of two subdivisions: the Clinical Pharmacy Room and the Pharmaceutical Information Room. The Clinical Pharmacy Room is mainly responsible for the review of medical orders, pharmaceutical ward rounds, patient medication monitoring, medication consultation, medication education, pharmaceutical group consultation, multidisciplinary diagnosis and treatment, prescription comments and review. The Pharmaceutical Information Room is mainly in charge of monitoring and analyzing the clinical application data of medications across the Hospital, data collection and reporting to the National Center for ADR Monitoring, China, Center for Antimicrobial Surveillance and the Prescription Comments and Review System, as well as pharmaceutical information maintenance of the software for rational drug use across the hospital.

The department now has 15 staff members, including 1 chief pharmacist, 1 associate chief pharmacist, and 1 master student supervisor, as well as 6 with a doctoral degree, and 6 with a master’s degree. There are 12 full-time clinical pharmacists, who are managing anti-infective drugs, nervous system drugs, anti-tumor drugs, immune system drugs and drugs for pain, endocrine and cardiovascular conditions. In 2018, as the training base for clinical pharmacists of the Chinese Hospital Association, the Clinical Pharmacy Department offered training programs on anti-tumor drugs, anti-infective drugs and immune system drugs. So far, 7 clinical pharmacist trainees have been enrolled, one of whom won the title of Outstanding Young Talent in Qilu Health System at the provincial level, and two were awarded with the title of Outstanding Young Talent at the hospital level.

The Clinical Pharmacy Department is undertaking part of the teaching tasks of Pharmacotherapeutics in theoretical courses for undergraduates majoring in Clinical Pharmacy of Shandong University, as well as the internship and tutoring program in Pharmacy for School of Pharmaceutical Sciences, Shandong University, Shandong Drug and Food Vocational College, Jinan Vocational College of Nursing and Shandong Medical College. It has completed one national continuing medical education project and two provincial continuing medical education projects.

In the past five years, it has undertaken 4 national projects, 7 projects at the provincial and ministerial level, and 5 projects at the department and bureau level, with a total project fund of about RMB 2 million Yuan. Meanwhile, 16 papers were published in SCI and 7 were published in Chinese core journals. Furthermore, one book, with the Clinical Pharmacy Department as the Editor-in-Chief, was completed and published by People's Medical Publishing House.
