The Critical Care Medicine Department of the Second Hospital of Shandong University was founded in 2005 by Professor Ma Cheng’en, who is a famous expert in Shandong Province. As the specialty leader, Professor Ma Cheng’en obtained the teaching qualification for national critical care medicine training in 2009, and was honored with more than 10 provincial and ministerial awards in 2020 including "National Excellent Communist Party Member", "National Advanced Individual in Combating COVID-19", "Chinese Good Fellow" and "Chinese Good Doctor ". He also holds more than 10 posts in domestic academic organizations. He is a corresponding editorial board member of the Journal of Shandong University.

Under the leadership of Ma Cheng’en and thanks to the unremitting efforts of the medical team, the Critical Care Medicine Department has developed into a specialty with its own characteristics and academic style, and enjoyed a fairly high popularity both inside and outside Shandong Province. The Department was rated as the nursing training base in Shandong Province in 2011 and designated as the training base for specialists and resident doctors in Shandong Province in 2020, and was awarded with the title of "Humanistic Care Department" by the Chinese Medical Doctor Association in 2020.

The Critical Care Medicine Department covers the building area of about 2,000 square meters, with 40 beds available.

Medical Members

The Critical Care Medicine Department now owns 16 members devoted to medicine, teaching and research, including 1 chief physician, 2 associate chief physicians, and 10 attending physicians. All members in the Critical Care Medicine Department have a doctoral degree or master’s degree.

Clinical Medicine

In the field of critical care medicine, this discipline is at the leading level in Shandong Province. In recent years, the Critical Care Medicine Department has carried out in-depth, meticulous and characteristic research in invasive/non-invasive hemodynamics, critical ultrasound, bedside continuous blood purification, ARDS, prone position ventilation, intra-aortic balloon pump, fiber bronchoscope, high-flow humidified oxygen therapy, ECMO and other technologies, which help it accumulated rich clinical experience and achieved good clinical results.

It has successfully treated countless patients with severe and complex multiple traumas, various severe infections, various shocks, various acute poisonings (such as severe organophosphorus poisoning, paraquat poisoning, etc.), cardiopulmonary-cerebral resuscitation, severe heatstroke, severe arrhythmia, refractory heart failure, severe heart failure, fulminant myocarditis, DIC, respiratory failure, acute respiratory distress syndrome, severe bronchial asthma, severe acute pancreatitis, acute liver failure,massive hemorrhage of gastrointestinal tract, alimentary tract failure, acute renal failure, diabetic ketoacidosis, diabetic hyperosmotic coma, hyperthyroidism crisis, hypophysis crisis, addisonian crisis, massive obstetrical haemorrhage, amniotic fluid embolism, acute fatty liver in pregnancy, HELLP syndrome, postpartum hemolytic uremic syndrome, thrombotic thrombocytopenic purpura, acute cerebrovascular disease, penicillin encephalopathy, severe epidemic hemorrhagic fever, etc.

Scientific Research Level

The Critical Care Medicine Department has undertaken 4 provincial and ministerial research projects, with thea total scientific research funds of 0.35 RMB million Yuan. It has published more than 40 papers at home and abroad, of which 13 papers have been included in SCI. It has won 2 provincial and ministerial-level Science and Technology Progress Awards, and led and participated in the compiling of more than 7 books.

Academic Exchange

Professor Ma Cheng’en has been sent to the United States, Belgium and other countries for further study. He has participated in many international conferences, presided over many domestic academic conferences, and delivered conference addresses.

It has invited many experts from the United States, Australia and other countries to our hospital for academic exchanges. Through such activities, we established good cooperative relations with them, and promoted academic development.
