Clinical Medicine

The Pediatric Surgery is a key clinical specialty in Shandong Province, and it’s at international advanced level and domestic leading level in the diagnosis and treatment of pediatric incontinence and defecation dysfunction. Every year, many patients from all over the country seek medical advice from the hospital. The Department has developed and improved many surgical methods as external sphincteroplasty for nerve-pressed gracilis to treat myogenic fecal incontinence, external sphincteroplasty forgluteus maximus, reconstruction of gluteus maximus and levator ani muscle to treat myogenic difficult defecation, pelvic floor suspension with iliopsoas to treat neurogenic pelvic floor paralysis, seromuscular bladder enlargement, seromuscular bladder encystations and vesical neck suspension to treat neurogenic bladder urethral dysfunction, etc.. It is one of the 2 centers firstly applying internal sphincteroplasty to treat defective development of the internal anal sphincter in China. In China, the Department takes the lead in carrying out and advocating a series of different surgical and conservative treatments, such as clean intermittent catheterization, Malone operation and antegrade enema, drug therapy, biofeedback therapy, electrophoto luminescence, etc. to treat pediatric incontinence and dysfunction and comprehensively improve the living and life quality of patients.

In order to fundamentally treat paralytic children with neurogenic incontinence and lower limb dysfunction, the Department also pays close attention to the diagnosis and treatment of their main primary diseases. Since 1990s, the Department has kept pace with foreign hospitals to perform the release of tethered spinal cord to treat congenital spinal meningocele, spinal lipoma, diastematomyelia, tethered cord syndrome, endodermal cyst of the spinal canal, etc. as one of the main unit applying this surgery early in China. The surgery significantly improves the prognosis of patients. At the end of 1990s, the Department successfully performed the transanal radical excision for congenital megacolon, and became the one of the 2 advanced departments firstly applying this revolutionary minimally invasive surgery in anorectal surgery. In 2001, the Department took the lead in the Province to apply cystourethroscope in the examination and treatment of various pediatric lower urinary tract diseases. In 2006, the Pediatric Surgery of the Second Hospital of Shandong University took the lead in China to diagnose and treat dysuresia caused by congenital prostatic cyst with cystourethroscope. In 2008, the Department took the lead in China (including Hong Kong, Macao and Taiwan) to perform the venae mesenterica superior - jugular vein- intrahepatic LPV bypass (REX surgery) and successfully treated 2 cases of prehepatic portal hypertension caused by cavernous degeneration of portal vein. Till now, 90 such cases have been cured, and the eradication rate of such diseases which can only be improved in syndromes in the past (like cirrhotic portal hypertension) is increased to 89%, filling the blank of this technology in China, and promoting the domestic diagnosis and treatment level of this disease to the international advanced rank.
