The Gastroenterology Department of the Second Hospital of Shandong University was established in May 1999. Since 2001, it has become a specialty with unique features, distinct academic style and high reputation at home and abroad under the leadership of national famous expert Prof. Guo Jianqiang and owing to the 21 years' unremitting endeavor of all members from the Department, and made significant contributions to the development of Gastroenterology in China. The Department was granted with the rights to confer the master's degree in 2001 and the doctoral degree in 2011 respectively and identified as a key specialty of Shandong Province in 2013. The Digestive System Oncology Laboratory under its charge is awarded as a key laboratory of colleges and universities in Shandong Province during the "12th Five-year Plan".
The Gastroenterology Department, occupying a building area of about 6,062m2, has divisions including Outpatients, Wards, Endoscopy Center, and Gastrointestinal Motility Test Room.
Medical Members:
The Gastroenterology Department currently has a total of 30 members devoted to medical treatment, teaching and research, including 1 doctoral supervisor, 6 chief physicians and 4 associate chief physicians. The young and middle-aged members below 45 years old account for 80%, and all doctors have a doctoral or master's degree.
Clinical medicine: Digestion wards: 76 beds are available. Medical staffs are sophisticated in technology and can provide standardized and outstanding services based on a complete three-level physician working system to provide safe, effective, advanced, scientific, and economic all-round medical services for patients suffering from various common, difficult and complicated gastrointestinal, hepatic and cholecystic and pancreatic diseases.
In teaching, the Department is responsible for the theoretical teaching, noviciate and probation of diagnostics and internal medicine of Clinical Medicine and Stomatology discipline of School of Medicine, Shandong University. As an awarding unit of master's degree and doctoral degree, the Department takes charge of the teaching and scientific research of digestive diseases of internal medicine of School of Medicine, Shandong University.
Gastroenterology Endoscopy Center: the center occupies an area of more than 800m2, and is equipped with high-end medical equipment as the world cutting-edge Olympus electronic gastroscopy, colonoscopy, duodenoscopy, and endoscopic ultrasonography for diagnosis and treatment of diseases in esophagus, stomach, biliary tract, colon, etc. The center offers various services like painless gastroscope, enteroscopy, minimally invasive treatment under all kinds of endoscopes, including endoscopic treatment of early gastrointestinal cancer, esophageal variceal ligation and sclerotherapy, dilation of esophageal stenosis, POEM for achalasia of cardia, balloon dilation, electrotomy of digestive tract polyps, emergency endoscopic treatment of gastrointestinal hemorrhage, ERCP and duodenal papillotomy, removal of gallstones under endoscope and endoscopic retrograde biliary drainage (ERBD), etc. In recent years, our department takes the lead in painless gastrointestinal endoscopy, which is acceptable to over 85% of the patients as it can relieve their pains and achieve more comprehensive, careful and refined endoscopic examination. The Digestive Endoscopy Center is staffed with full-time anesthetists to ensure patients' safety and fully relieve them from pains.
Gastroenterology Pathology Room: as an auxiliary unit of the Gastroenterology Endoscopy Center, it creates a seamless connection between endoscopic physicians and pathologists, effectively improves the accuracy of pathologic and clinical diagnosis, optimizes the consulting process and facilitates the medical service for patients.
Gastrointestinal Motility Test Room: the Room has the international leading esophageal high resolution measure (HRM), multi-channel electrogastrograph, esophageal 24-hour pH (portable), impedance reflux monitoring and anorectal manometry, etc. The Room can conduct examinations as EGG, esophageal and gastric 24h pH monitoring, esophageal manometry, gastric emptying examination, gastrointestinal transit time (GITT) examination, psychological depression scale test and biofeedback for constipation treatment. Both examination and treatment are at a leading level in the Province.
The medical team of the Department attaches great importance to clinical medical practice and is good at summarizing clinical experience. Since its establishment more than 20 years ago, the Department has developed into a clinical specialty department with rational member echelon, sound service capability, first-class equipment and accurate diagnosis and treatment of various difficult diseases of the digestive system thanks to the efforts of all medical staff. The Department cooperates with Beijing Friendship Hospital, Capital Medical University, and participates in the National Clinical Research Center for Digestive Diseases. The Department has undertaken many provincial and domestic conferences and saloons of digestive diseases, and enjoys a remarkable academic position in China and Shandong Province.
Scientific Research Level
The Gastroenterology Department has successively undertaken nearly 10 research subjects of the state, the province, the ministries and the commissions with total research grant approaching RMB 1 million Yuan. It has published over 100 papers on domestic and foreign journals, won 3 technological progress awards from the state, the province, the ministries and the commissions, and presided over or participated in the compilation of more than 10 books, demonstrating its stunning strength and good conditions in scientific research. Prof. Guo Jianqiang, who is the academic leader and famous expert of gastroenterology, concurrently serves as a member of Early Cancer Group of Chinese Society of Digestive Endoscopy, a member of Digestion Branch of Chinese Medical Doctor Association, a vice director of Digestion Branch of Shandong Provincial Medical Association, Digestive Endoscopy Branch of Shandong Provincial Medical Association, Digestive Branch of Shandong Medical Doctor Association, Oncology Endoscopy Branch of Shandong Anti-cancer Association, and Chinese Digestive Psychosomatic Union Shandong Committee, the Quality Control Committee Member of Shandong Society of Gastroenterology Endoscopy, and a member of Hepatopathy Branch of Shandong Provincial Medical Association.

The Gastroenterology Department has sent 5 experts to USA, Sweden, Japan and other countries for advanced studies. We have presided over, participated in and made speeches on global, international and domestic academic conferences.
The Department has invited famous scholars of USA, Japan and other countries to China for academic exchange. On this basis, good cooperative relations have been established and academic development has been promoted.
