The Gastrointestinal Surgery of Second Hospital of Shandong University was founded by the famous expert Prof. Ding Yinlu in 2018, and has become a specialty with unique features and academic style and comparatively high reputation in China and Shandong Province thanks to the persistent efforts of all department members. The Department has made outstanding contributions to the development and popularization of laparoscopic minimally invasive techniques of gastrointestinal surgery in the Province. Successively the Gastrointestinal Surgery becomes the director unit affiliated department of Special Committee of Gastrointestinal Surgery of Shandong Society of Geriatrics, the vice chairman affiliated department of Shandong Provincial Specialized Alliance of Gastrointestinal Surgery, the affiliated department of the 1st Batch of Young Science and Technology Talent Team of Department of Science & Technology of Shandong Province, the affiliated department of member unit of North China Bariatric & Metabolic Surgery Alliance and the affiliated department of China Charity Federation GIPAP. In recent years, the Department was granted by Shandong University with rights to award the master's degree and the doctoral degree.
The Gastrointestinal Surgery has divisions such as outpatient and ward, and is responsible for the diagnosis and treatment of acute abdomen of the hospital.
Medical Members
The Department currently has14 members devoted to medicine, teaching and research, including 1 doctoral supervisor, 2 professors and 3 associate professors and associate researchers. Members at middle and young age below 45 account for 90%，and all doctors have a doctoral or master’ s degree.
1 of the middle-aged and young doctors in the Department is promoted to associate professor as an exception. The academic leader and doctoral supervisor are in their prime age and follow multiple stable research directions.
The Department has 4 doctors and over 20 masters, and is the person-in-charge unit of “Ding Yinlu Young Science and Technology Talent Innovation Team” of the Department of Science & Technology of Shandong Province.
Clinical Medicine
The Department is at domestic advanced level and provincial leading level in gastrointestinal surgery. The gastrointestinal surgery team has developed total laparoscopic gastrointestinal tumor surgery far ahead of others, kept on learning, improving and making innovation in the international up-to-date surgical therapeutic regimens, and insisted on the popularization of standardized treatment of digestive system diseases involving the gastrointestinal tract in China and Shandong Province. In such a process, the Department has summarized a set of reasonable and highly efficient integrated therapeutic regimes for gastrointestinal tumors. On the basis of general surgery, the Department is actively improving the specialty construction, and is mainly devoted to the diagnosis and treatment of digestive system tumors involving the gastrointestinal tract, obesity and metabolic disease, gastrointestinal and external gastrointestinal stromal tumors, gastroesophageal reflux disease, abdominal hernia, Intestinal leakage (fistula), abdominal trauma, tumors of jejunoileum and appendix, inflammatory bowel disease, retroperitoneal mass, etc.
Centering on digestive system tumor involving the gastrointestinal tract, the Gastrointestinal Surgery keeps pace with the times and makes innovation on the basis of its competence of traditional laparotomy, and actively develops the total laparoscopic gastrointestinal surgery to accomplish tumor eradication and digestive tract reconstruction without any incision or through a small incision, which becomes a characteristic diagnosis and treatment item of the Gastrointestinal Surgery and a minimally invasive treatment platform of patients that could greatly reduce the metal pressure and pains patients suffer. The Department also has designed many regimens in terms of total laparoscopic digestive tract reconstruction of gastric tumor to carry out Billroth II+Braun anastomosis, overlap anastomosis, modified overlap anastomosis, side overlap anastomosis, π anastomosis, delta anastomosis, Roux-en-Y Uncut anastomosis, and dual-channel anastomosis. It is at a provincial leading position in terms of number of total laparoscopic surgeries and surgical skills. Furthermore, the Department keeps on summarizing and optimizing the skills of total laparoscopic digestive tract reconstruction, and has put forward the technical skills of Billroth II 6-step method and Uncut Roux-en-Y 7-step method. The Department’s efforts in exploring and popularizing standardized digestive tract reconstruction are extensively recognized by many domestic teams.
Moreover, the Gastrointestinal Surgery is gradually carrying out reduced or single incision laparoscopic surgery (SILS) to accomplish traditional abdominal surgeries via a single incision and a single incision + 1(SILS+1). Examples include SILS+1 gastric cancer radical resection, single-incision laparoscopic appendectomy and single-incision laparoscopic hernioplasty, which can not only limit surgical trauma and pains, but also achieve the purpose of aesthetics to the maximum degree and reduce the psychological and mental pressure on patients.
The Gastrointestinal Surgery is a pioneer in the Province in weight loss and metabolism surgeries, and could design feasible surgical therapeutic regimens for morbid obesity, diabetes, metabolic diseases including metabolic syndrome, and sleep apnea syndrome induced by obesity, polycystic ovarian syndrome, hypertension, hyperlipemia, as well as hyperuricemia. The Department is also capable of performing TLSG without auxiliary incision and total laparoscopic Roux-en-Y gastric bypass (TLRYGB), etc.
As an affiliated department of China Charity Federation GIPAP, the Gastrointestinal Surgery has achieved a lot in the treatment of gastrointestinal mesenchymoma and external gastrointestinal mesenchymoma, and accumulated abundant experience during the treatment of many patients with difficult or critical diseases. In addition to a high progression-free survival, the Department is also at domestic leading position in respect of surgical treatment and targeted drug treatment.
In view of critical gastroesophageal reflux diseases, the Gastrointestinal Surgery has performed total laparoscopic fundus folding (Nissen surgery and Toupet surgery) and other surgeries to treat severe gastroesophageal reflux disease through minimally invasive surgeries with little pain and high cure rate, which relief patients from long-term ailments.
The Gastrointestinal Surgery carries out routine hernioplastyand laparoscopic hernioplasty to treat common abdominal hernia, such as inguinal oblique hernia, inguinal straight hernia, femoral hernia, linea alba hernia, incisional hernia, parastatal hernia, etc. While skillfully performing routine surgeries, the Department ceaselessly makes innovation and rescues patients with various stubborn diseases, and has completed the first laparoscopic incisional hernioplasty and laparoscopic parastatal hernioplasty of the hospital.
Besides, the Gastrointestinal Surgery has considerable experience and effective therapies against benign and malignant tumors of jejunum, ileum and appendix, fistulas in digestive system, including the gastrointestinal tract, enhanced recovery after surgery (ERAS) and nutritional support, abdominal trauma, inflammatory bowel disease, and retroperitoneal mass.
Scientific Research Level
The Gastrointestinal Surgery has successively presided over many research projects of National Health Commission, Department of Science & Technology of Shandong Province, Science & Technology Department of Xinjiang Uygur Autonomous Region with accumulated total research grant approaching RMB 1 million Yuan. Furthermore, it has published over 40 papers on domestic and foreign journals, edited and co-edited nearly 20 books, demonstrating its stunning strength and good conditions in scientific research. The academic leader Prof. Ding Yinlu, a famous specialist of gastrointestinal surgery, concurrently serves as the director of Special Committee of Gastrointestinal Surgery of Shandong Society of Geriatrics, vice director of ERAS Group of CMEA Special Committee of Abdominal Tumor, deputy chief of Surgery Group of Digital Medicine Branch of Shandong Provincial Medical Association Digital Medicine, standing committee member of CMEA Special Committee of Abdominal Tumor, national lecturer of SoTM and CATP, senior tour lecturer of Shandong Provincial Gastric Cancer GPS, and lecturer of Shandong Provincial Academy of Laparoscopic Gastric, Colon and Rectal Surgery.

The Gastrointestinal Surgery has sent many members to USA, UK, Korea and other countries as well as international and domestic first-rate hospitals in Beijing, Shanghai and Chongqing for advanced studies. It has presided over and attended many domestic and provincial academic conferences, and showed up in domestic gastrointestinal surgery conferences on behalf of the hospital in Beijing, Jilin, Anhui, Tianjin, Hebei, Xinjiang, Chongqing, Zhejiang and Jiangsu, and made special academic reports on professional online platforms of gastrointestinal surgery.
The Department has invited many experts from domestic top teams in succession to carry out academic exchange and surgery demonstration, through which, good cooperative relationship is established and academic development is promoted.
