To ensure service quality and improve diagnosis and treatment level, the Gynecology Department of the Second Hospital of Shandong University has appointed Prof. Liang Zhiqing from Third Military Medical University Southwest Hospital, Prof. Duan Hua from Beijing Obstetrics and Gynecology Hospital and Prof. Zhang Zhenyu from Beijing Chaoyang Hospital as visiting professors to give academic lectures, surgical demonstration and technical exchange on an irregular basis, so as to promote the maturity and development of minimally invasive technologies such as laparoscope and hysteroscope, etc..
Gynecology Endocrinology Technology: a specialist outpatient and a health management archive of endocrine diseases are set up and diagnosis and treatment specifications are developed to ensure the standardized and systematic examination and treatment of each patient. Standardized diagnosis and treatment of infertility are also supported. The Department has achieved satisfactory results in hysteroscopic-laparoscopic treatment of infertility caused by tubal factors. The Hospital invested RMB 3 million Yuan to construct the Endocrinology and Assisted Reproduction Technology Laboratory in order to better serve patients.

The Department has high-level professional technicians and sound clinical equipment, and is developing basing on the major characteristic of “minimal invasion”. The Department consists of general gynecology, tumor gynecology, and medical group of reproductive medicine and family planning, which are independent from each other and develop collaboratively. Gradually, the Department sets up and improves specialty outpatients covering Medical group of reproductive medicine and family planning, and is further constructing a Gynecology Endocrinology and Reproduction Laboratory to keep pace with the latest international techniques, enhance the echelon construction, and improve the Department’s popularity in the province and country. The Department has sound infrastructures, strong technical forces, reasonable talent echelon, harmonious environment and first-rate service consciousness.
The Department now has 4 chief physicians/professors, 3 associate chief physicians and 4 attending doctors. Among them, 4 are master supervisors, 10 have doctoral degree and 18 have master’s degree, who collaboratively develop in medical treatment, teaching and scientific research. The Department is equipped with advanced equipment such as laparoscope, hysteroscope and digital colposcope. It consists of specialties of general gynecology, gynecology tumor, reproductive endocrinology and family planning.
The Gynecology Department firstly introduces laparoscopic and hysteroscopic techniques into Shandong Province for various minimally invasive surgeries to keep patient safe from surgical pains. At present, the laparoscopic technique can substitute 70% of the traditional laparotomy and is highly commented by patients for its advantages of less pain, fast recovery and short length of hospitalization. With provincial leading hysteroscopic-laparoscopic technique, the Department is now one of the characteristic specialties of the Second Hospital of Shandong University attracting numerous doctors for advanced studies in each year. The Gynecology Department is capable to perform over 2,000 surgeries of different types in a year to treat malignant tumors including cervical carcinoma, oophoroma, and carcinoma of endometrium for patients with complicated and difficult diseases from other provinces or hospitals. The Department is also capable of plastic surgeries including female external genitalia orthosis, colpoplasty, etc. It is also a training base of urinary incontinence and pelvic floor reconstruction in Shandong Province, and an early implementer of pelvic floor reconstruction technique for female in Shandong, such as sacrak colpopexy of vaginal stump and laparoscopic Burch surgery to treat stress urinary incontinence of female. The Department has found a solution for urinary incontinence, anterior and posterior vaginal wall protruding, uterine prolapse and other problems expected in middle aged and elderly women and improved their quality of life.
The Gynecology Endoscopic Technical Training Base of the Second Hospital of Shandong University is the first batch of accepted MOH Level-4 Gynecology Endoscopic Surgery Training Base. Since 2010, 30 sessions of endoscopic surgery training classes have been held for gynecologists. The Department owns 4 “1,000-level laminar flow” clean operating rooms, and has invested RMB 800 million Yuan in minimally invasive (endoscopic) equipment. As an earlier establishment in the Province, the Department has a strong technical force and enjoys a leading provincial position in terms of technical level and number of surgeries. It has cultivated many excellent medical members and is praised by all walks of life.
Family planning technology: conventional outpatient services and ward-based family planning are carried out, and ultrasound-guided visible painless induced abortion, hysteroscopic removal of residual pregnancy tissue are supported. As a part of the PAC Project initiated by China Women's Development Foundation, the Department has set up a national PAC Outpatient. The PAC Project refers to standard service processes to promote contraceptive knowledge to women and their spouses who have undergone induced abortion, whether in a collective form or one by one, so as to help them timely adopt effective contraceptives and avoid repeated abortion
The Gynecology Outpatient provides all-weather services by experts, and has liquid-based cytology detection system, electronic colposcopy and LEEP equipment for early diagnosis and treatment of cervical lesions. Infertility Specialist Outpatient, as one of the characteristics of the Department, currently provides active immunotherapy for recurrent spontaneous abortion with satisfactory results, realizing the couples of infertility to have a baby. The outpatient also provides a variety of analgesic and painless surgical services to relieve patients from suffering.

The Department also great importance to academic atmosphere, and has undertaken more than 10 scientific research subjects at present, including 3 provincial and ministerial subjects, 7 bureau-level subjects and 2 horizontal subjects. 3 subjects have been appraised and closed at provincial level, of which, 2 are award-wining and international leading. More than 30 academic papers are published on domestic and international journals, with 10 included by SCI, and more than 10 books come off the press.
