Founded in 2014 by Prof. Hu Yong, a national famous ankle surgical specialist, the Hand Surgery/Ankle Surgery of the Second Hospital of Shandong University has become a specialty with unique features, distinct academic style and high reputation at home and abroad with outstanding contribution to the development of hand surgery and ankle surgery in China attributing to the unremitting endeavor of all members from the Department. The Hand Surgery/Ankle Surgery is the group leader unit of Ankle Surgery Group, Orthopedics Branch of Shandong Provincial Medical Association and the director unit of Special Committee of Ankle Surgery of Osteopath Branch of Shandong Medical Doctor Association with the right to grant the master’s degree on behalf of Shandong University. The Ankle Surgery of the Second Hospital of Shandong University and the Ankle Surgery Research Center of Shandong University (the 1st provincial ankle surgery center in Shandong Province) were founded in 2014 and March 2015 respectively. Meanwhile, the Department is identified as the Shandong Provincial Training Base of Ankle Surgery, Orthopedics Branch of Chinese Medical Association, SICOT Western China Ankle Surgery Training Center and Shandong Provincial Training Base of Chinese College of Foot and Ankle Medical Education
The Hand and Foot Surgery has divisions including outpatient, foot/ankle ward, hand surgical ward, diabetic foot ward, pediatric ward, ICU after microscopic surgery, functional rehabilitation room, microscopic surgery laboratory, etc.
Medical Members
The Department currently has 14 members devoted to medicine, teaching and research, including 2 specially-appointed professors, 1 rehabilitation therapist, 1 master supervisor and 3 professors. Members at middle and young age below 45 years old account for 78.6% and 78.6% of the members in the Department hold a doctoral or master’s degree. 2 experts enjoy governmental special allowance.
Clinical Medicine
The Department is at domestic advanced level in various congenital deformities of fingers and toes, ankle and wrist arthroscopy, finger reconstruction, wound repair with flap, sports injury of ankle, diabetic foot, peripheral nerve damage repair, replantation of severed finger/limb, etc. Its skills in treating congenital toe deformity and hallux valgus are superior to the peers in China. The Department takes in the lead in performing new techniques such as a new method of toe syndactyly separation.
In recent years, the Specialty has carried out in-depth, meticulous and characteristic study of the treatment and diagnosis of ankle and foot deformity, pedopathy, etc., and achieved excellent results.
Scientific Research Level
The Hand Surgery/Ankle Surgery has undertaken 6 research subjects of the state, the province and the ministries with total research grant exceeding RMB 1 million Yuan, published over 20 papers on domestic and foreign journals, and edited or co-edited more than 10 books, demonstrating its strong strength and good conditions in scientific research. Prof. Hu Yong, the academic leader and famous ankle surgical specialist in China, concurrently serves as the member of Ankle Surgery Group of Orthopedics Branch of Chinese Medical Association and Ankle Surgery Working Committee of Orthopedist Branch of Chinese Medical Doctor Association, a senior lecturer of the National Foot and Ankle Lecturer Group, the vice director of the Ankle Surgery Group of SICOT China, the vice group leader of the Ankle Surgery Group of Orthopedics Branch of China International Exchange and Promotion Association for Medical and Healthcare, the vice director of Special Committee of Ankle Surgery, Orthoperdy-Traumatology Branch of Chinese Association of Integrative Medicine, the vice president of Chinese College of Foot and Ankle Medical Education, the president of Shandong Provincial Branch, the member of Microscopic Surgery Branch of Chinese Medical Doctor Association and Orthopedics Branch of Shandong Provincial Medical Association, the vice director of Orthopedics Expert Committee of Wu Jieping Medical Foundation Shandong Branch, the group leader of Ankle Surgery Group of Orthopedics Branch of Shandong Provincial Medical Association, the director of Special Committee of Ankle Surgery of Osteopath Branch of Shandong Medical Doctor Association, the vice director of Microscopic Surgery Branch of Shandong Provincial Medical Association, and the standing editorial board member of Electronic Journal of Foot and Ankle Surgery, etc..
Academic Exchange and Cooperation
The Hand Surgery /Ankle Surgery has successfully dispatched many experts to UK, USA and other countries as well as hospitals in Beijing, Shanghai and other cities for advanced study, and presided over, attended and made speeches on many international and domestic academic conferences. The Department holds Shandong Province Ankle Surgery Summit Forum every year, which has certain social influence. In September 2016, the Department organized the 19th National Ankle Surgery Academic Annual Meeting, and was highly praised by the participants.
The Department has invited many experts from countries and regions like UK, USA, Japan, Korea and Hong Kong for academic exchange, through which, good cooperative relationship is established and academic development is promoted.
