The Department has set up academician Dong Jiahong’s workstation, and the Second Hospital of Shandong University Sub-center of the Department of Hepatic-biliary-pancreatic Medicine, Beijing Tsinghua Changgeng Hospital, Institute of hepatobiliary and vascular surgery of Shandong University, and the journal of Chinese Journal of Current Advances in General Surgery managed by the Ministry of Education and hosted by Shandong University. It has rapidly developed into a medical, teaching and research platform with the core of clinical treatment of complex hepatobiliary and pancreatic diseases. Comprehensive treatment and individualized treatment of complex hepatobiliary and pancreatic malignancies mainly based on surgery; Minimally invasive treatment of cholelithiasis by laparoscopy, duodenoscopy and choledochoscopy is the clinical characteristic and advantage of Hepatobiliary Surgery.

The Department currently has 10 members devoted to medicine, teaching and research, including 1 academician, 2 chief physicians/professors, 1 associate chief physicians, 2 attending doctors and 4 residents. 70% of the members are under 45 years old, and 100% have a doctoral or master’s degree. For many times it was awarded the Outstanding Science and Technology Progress Award of Shandong Province, the Science and Technology Progress Award at Bureau Level, the Development Contribution Award, the New Technology Award, the Success Award in Rescuing Critically Ill Patients.

In the field of Hepatobiliary Surgery, this discipline is at the advanced level in China and the leading level in Shandong Province. More than 1200 cases of patients were treated in the Department every year, and 82% of the patients underwent surgery. Most of them were complicated Level-4 or Level-3 operations, of which minimally invasive surgery accounted for more than 60%. The Department routinely conducts open surgery and laparoscopic minimally invasive surgery for benign and malignant tumors of liver, gallbladder, spleen and duodenum, such as liver cancer, gallbladder cholangiocarcinoma, pancreatic cancer, hepatic/splenic hemangioma, hepatic adenoma, pancreatic cystadenoma, huge complex retroperitoneal tumor, stromal tumor, etc; Interventional embolization and minimally invasive ablation guided by B-ultrasound for liver cancer and liver metastasis; Laparoscopy, duodenoscopy, choledochoscopy, two mirror or three mirror combination of minimally invasive treatment of choledocholithiasis and cholecystolithiasis, etc; Comprehensive treatment of severe acute pancreatitis; The treatment of complex abdominal trauma involved liver, gallbladder, pancreas, spleen, stomach, intestine and abdominal blood vessels; The treatment of multiple organ invasion by malignant tumor, by combined resection and radical operation of multiple organs in the middle and upper abdomen, vascular resection and reconstruction, organ function reconstruction. Laparoscopic minimally invasive surgery includes cholecystectomy, resection of bile duct cyst, choledochojejunostomy, hepatolobectomy and segmental hepatectomy, splenectomy, distal pancreatectomy, pancreaticoduodenectomy, splenectomy combined with portal vena cava devascularization. The Department successfully implemented the first case of liver tumor resection in vitro and autologous liver transplantation in Shandong Province, which filled the blank of this technology in shandong province. Keeping pace with the international academic frontier, the Department has accumulated abundant experience in multi-disciplinary diagnosis and treatment of malignant tumor, targeted therapy and Immunotherapy. The Department follows the concept of rapid recovery, by minimizing surgical trauma 、physical discomfort and mental pressure in the process of diagnosis and treatment of patients, to achieve the purpose of rapid physical and mental rehabilitation.

The Department has sent many members to the United States, Japan, South Korea and other countries, as well as Beijing, Shanghai, Wuhan and other domestic first-class hospitals for advanced study, established a remote consultation platform,  frequently invited the domestic top expert team to the hospital for surgical demonstration and academic exchanges, and established a good cooperative relationship with brother units to promote the development of the discipline.
