The Infectious Diseases/Hepatology Department of the Second Hospital of Shandong University was established in 2008 by Prof. Wang Lei, who is nationwide famous expert of liver diseases, has formed its own clinical features and academic style with relatively high reputation at home and abroad and contributions to the development of hepatology in China. The Department was granted with the rights to award the master's degree and the doctoral degree in 1997 and 2010 respectively, and has divisions such as outpatient, ward and Medical Molecular Hepatology Laboratory, a key laboratory of medicine and hygiene in Shandong province. The Laboratory and the Department are jointly responsible for the general and youth projects of the National Natural Science Fund, National Science and Technology Major Sub-projects related to the prevention and control of critical infectious diseases such as AIDS and viral hepatitis during the “11th Five-year Plan” and “12th Five-year Plan”, the problem tackling projects of Shandong Provincial Science and Technology Development Plan, and research projects of Shandong Provincial Natural Science Fund.

Medical Members

The Department now has 2 chief physicians, 4 associate chief physicians, and 3 attending doctors, consisting of 1 doctoral supervisor, 2 master supervisors, 1 professor and 5 associate professors. The young and middle-aged members below 45 years old account for 67%, and members with a doctoral or master's degree account for 92% of the whole Department.

Clinical Medicine

The Department is at a leading level in clinical medical treatment and scientific research of hepatology at home or abroad. In recent years, it has designed observational studies of drug resistance and withdrawal for Hepatitis B antiviral drugs and studied the adefovir dipivoxil related hypophophatemic oestemalacia in an in-depth, meticulous and characteristic manner. Its clinical diagnosis, treatment and research level are internationally advanced and domestically leading, and related research findings are quoted in the Guidelines on the Management of Hepatitis B issued by American Association for the Study of Liver Diseases, Asian-Pacific Association for the Study of the Liver and World Health Organization.

Scientific Research Level

The Department and the Laboratory has undertaken over 10 national and provincial research projects in succession with total research grant exceeding RMB 4 million Yuan, published over 40 papers on domestic and foreign journals, of which, more than 20 have been included in SCI, and co-edited more than 10 books, demonstrating its stunning strength and good conditions in scientific research. The academic leader Prof. Wang Lei is a famous hepatologist in China, who concurrently serves as the standing committee member of Infectious Diseases Branch of Chinese Medical Association, national member of Infection Doctor Branch of Chinese Medical Doctor Association and Pharmacovigilance Special Committee of Chinese Pharmaceutical Association, national medical malpractice expert of Chinese Medical Association, the Director of the Infectious Diseases Branch of Shandong Provincial Medical Association, and the editorial board member of over 10 journals including Chinese Journal of Hepatology.

Academic Exchange and Cooperation

The Department and the Laboratory has sent many experts to Europe and USA for advanced studies and international academic conferences. They have given special lectures, presided over and made speeches on domestic academic conferences for many times. In succession, directors of Hepatology Branch of Chinese Medical Association, vice directors of Internal Medicine Branch and Infection Branch as well as experts of the “Changjiang Scholar Program” have been invited to the hospital for academic exchange, and close cooperation relations were established to promote academic development.
