The Joint Surgery/Sports Medicine Department of the Second Hospital of Shandong University is a key specialty with its own characteristics, and is also a key clinical specialty in Shandong Province. The Department, founded by Professor Wang Shaojin, the Founder of Shandong Joint Surgery and Doctoral Supervisor, is now in the charge of Chief Physician Liu Wenguang. Now there are 16 doctors, all with a master or doctoral degree and the training experience from first-class hospitals at home and abroad.

The Department took the lead in carrying out hip and knee replacement surgery in Shandong province, and can provide personalized stepwise treatment for patients with different degrees of arthritis and Osteonecrosis of the Femoral Head (ONFH). It has accumulated rich experience in complex artificial joint replacement and joint revision procedures, and has become the center of joint disease diagnosis and treatment in the province. The Department is the first in China to apply 3D printing technology to orthopedic surgeries, which has promoted the development of precision medicine.

Led by the Chief Physician Liu Wenguang, honored with the title of “Leading Medical Talent in Shandong Province”, and closely following the development direction of joint and sports medicine, the Joint Surgery Department has been implementing new technologies in hip arthroscopy, shoulder arthroscopy, knee osteotomy, meniscus ligament repair, unicompartmental knee arthroplasty(KUA), hip-retaining ONFH, PRP tissue regeneration, 3D printing precision medical surgery and joint rehabilitation. In the treatment of joint diseases and sports injuries, it is now in the leading position in Shandong Province, and has been widely recognized by peers and patients. Liu is the founder of the Shandong Society of Regenerative Medicine, and holds academic part-time positions in carious institutions including Shandong Orthopaedic Society and Shandong Society for Sports Medicine.

The Department has undertaken more than 10 national and provincial scientific research projects, compiled and published more than 20 papers in SCI and core journals at home and abroad, and participated in the editing of one postgraduate textbook of Shandong University. It has been granted with two utility model patents, and won a number of new technology awards of the hospital. As the clinical teaching base of Cheeloo College of Medicine, Shandong University, it has trained a large number of master and doctoral students and regular trainees.
