Specialty Profile

The Medical Imaging Center of the Second Hospital of Shandong University, founded in 1997, and after the unremitting efforts of several generations of medical professionals, has developed to a specialty with its own characteristics and academic style. It enjoys high reputation both at home and abroad with outstanding contributions to the development of medical imaging specialty in China. In 1997 and 2011, it was authorized to confer master's degree and doctor's degree respectively. It was titled as the key specialty in Shandong Province in 2010 and Key Clinical Specialty in Shandong Province in December 2020.

The Medical Imaging Center consists of general X-ray, CT imaging, MR imaging, ultrasound imaging, PET/CT imaging and other diagnosis and treatment units, with a building area of about 3,020 square meters (including the outpatient area of 1,754 square meters and the inpatient area of 1,266 square meters).

There are more than 160 medical, teaching and research staff, including 1 doctoral supervisor, 2 master supervisors, 2 professors and 8 associate professors. Among them, 95% are middle-aged and young medical workers under the age of 45 and 45% have obtained a doctoral or master degree.

Among the young and middle-aged key physicians of the Department, four have returned to China after studying in the University of Southern California, and one was awarded as the top talent at the hospital level. With the specialty leaders and doctoral supervisors all being young and middle-aged professionals, the Department has formed multiple stable research directions, and have trained 6 doctoral students and 20 master students.

Clinic Medicine

The Imaging Center is at the internationally advanced level and the domestically leading level in the field of coronary artery imaging, pulmonary nodules screening and diagnosis. It took the lead in the study of CT coronary artery imaging and plaque properties in China, and published the first research paper on CT coronary artery imaging in China in the Chinese Journal of Radiology.

Professional Equipment

At present, the Imaging Center is equipped with more than 30 devices including 3 sets of gemstone spiral CT, 2 sets of 128-slice and 16-slice spiral CTs, 3 sets of superconducting high field intensity 3.0T magnetic resonance imaging, 2 sets of 1.5T magnetic resonance imaging, 1 set of PET/CT, 4 sets of digital subtraction angiography devices, DRs, digital gastrointestinal devices and high-end colored Doppler ultrasound diagnosis system.

Main Research Direction and Research Content

  1. Early non-invasive imaging diagnosis of coronary heart disease and risk assessment of coronary atherosclerotic plaque. Compared with the invasive catheter coronary angiography with intense radiation and high cost, multi-slice spiral CT coronary angiography is applied to analyze the properties of atherosclerotic plaques, evaluate their stability and conduct follow-up for treatment.

2. Central nervous system angiography. Multi-slice spiral CT (MSCT) craniocerebral and cervical angiography is applied for the screening, location, classification and diagnosis of craniocerebral aneurysm, identification of the nature of intracranial and extracranial vascular conditions in the neck, as well as the evaluation of plaque stability.

3. Magnetic resonance defecography. The motion of the pelvic floor at rest and in defecation is observed under MRI monitoring, along with evaluation and classification of pelvic floor relaxation and organ prolapse and other pelvic floor disorders.

4. Spiral CT enterography. Based on the advantages of multi-slice spiral CT and barium enterography, conventional CT images are reconstructed in the form of coronal plane and sagittal plane for comprehensive and detailed analysis and evaluation of the intestinal mucosa, intestinal wall and parenteral lesions, which has significantly improved the diagnostic accuracy of intestinal diseases.

5. Whole brain 3D spin-labeled cerebral perfusion imaging. Accurate diagnosis of craniocerebral diseases or tumor classification is conducted without the need to use contrast agents to reflect the cerebral tissue perfusion, providing guidance for the formulation of clinical treatment plan and the evaluation of treatment efficacy.

Scientific Research Level

The Imaging Center has undertaken nearly 20 national and provincial research projects, with a total research fund of more than RMB 1 million Yuan. It has published more than 200 research papers in professional journals at home and abroad, won 5 awards for scientific and technological progress at the provincial and ministerial level, and led or participated in the compiling of more than 20 books, which is all evidence of its strong scientific research strength and good scientific research conditions. The specialty leader, Professor Shao Guangrui, a famous imaging expert in China, holds more than 10 positions in academic organizations at home and abroad, and is the deputy editor-in-chief, executive editor or editorial board member of 6 professional journals. He has won 5 honorary awards of the provincial and ministerial level.

Academic Exchange and Cooperation

The Imaging Center has sent 5 young and middle-aged doctors to the United States and other countries for further study with duration of more than half a year. Furthermore, it has hosted or participated in a remarkable number of international and domestic academic conferences, with relevant staff delivering speeches at the conferences.

Many experts from the United States, UK and other countries have been invited to the hospital for academic exchanges, in which way, a good cooperative relationship has been established and academic development was promoted.
