Founded in 1999 by the national famous expert Prof. Zhang Qinglin, the Neurosurgery Department of the Second Hospital of Shandong University has become a specialty with unique features, distinct academic style and high reputation at home and abroad and made outstanding contributions to the development of neurosurgery in China attributing to the persistent efforts of past generations. The Department was granted with the rights to award master’s degree and doctoral degree and established the 1st Minimally Invasive Neurosurgery Treatment Center in East China in the year of its foundation, and was recognized as the Key Discipline of the Second Hospital of Shandong University and the Key Medicine and Health Discipline of Shandong Province in 2003, and the Key Discipline of Shandong Province in 2006. It is also in the 1st batch of key disciplines selected into the surgery system of Shandong University. In 2005, the Department was approved as the MOH Clinical Pharmacology Base and in 2013 the Key Clinical Specialty of Shandong Province.
The Neurosurgery Department, occupying a building area of about 3,000m2, has divisions including outpatient clinic, ward, ICU and Gamma Knife Treatment Center.
Medical Members
The Department currently has 26 members devoted to medicine, teaching and research, including 2 doctoral supervisors, 5 master supervisors, 7 chief physicians and 5 associate chief physicians. Members at middle and young age below 45 years old account for 61% and 97% of its members have a doctoral or master’s degree.
The academic leader and middle-aged and young experts in the Department have a number of steady research directions. As a professional neurosurgery doctoral and master’s base in the Province, the Department has cultivated 3 postdoctors, 16 doctoral and 43 master’s degree candidates, who work in hospitals in and out of the Province, and many of them have been admitted to domestic and international top medical organizations and institutes as the academic backbone.
Clinical Medicine
The Neurosurgery Department is equipped with the world’s advanced medical equipment and precise microsurgical instrument for neurosurgery, including the currently international leading Leksell Gamma Knife® Perfexion™gamma knife, Leica M530 multifluorescent surgical microscope, Zeiss Penterofluorescent surgical microscope and intraoperative real-time HD digital imaging system, Karl-Storz ventriculoscope, Medtronic intraoperative neurophysiological monitoring system, video EEG monitoring system, Medtronic high speed craniotomy power system, UK VIASYS intraoperative cerebral blood flow monitoring system, and Leksell stereotactic system. The hybrid operation room is equipped with PET-CT, GE INNOVA IGSD730 and the IGS630dual C-arm digital subtraction angiography machine to ensure the accuracy and safety of surgeries.
The Neurosurgery Department is domestically advanced in microsurgery of cerebrovascular disease, intravascular interventional therapy, comprehensive therapy of glioma, diagnosis and treatment of adenoma of pituitary gland, basis cranialneuro surgery and functional neurosurgery. In addition to conventional craniotomy microsurgery to treat cerebrovascular disease, the Department is also capable of treating cerebral aneurysms with interventional embolization, cerebral arteriovenous malformation, dural arteriovenous fistula and carotid-cavernous fistula, stent implantation to treat carotid artery and intracranial artery stenosis. For the past few years, the Department has practiced new techniques such as carotid endarterectomy, intracranial external artery bypass grafting, and cranial drilling revascularization to treat moyamoya disease, achieving remarkable effects. In terms of intracranial tumor treatment, the Department applies sophisticated micro-neurosurgical technology to resectgliomas at different parts, and provides chemoradiotherapy after surgery to improve the surgical effect. The Department shows its strength in the capacity and satisfactory effects of performing various difficult craniocerebral surgeries, including transnasal-sphenoidal or transcranial resection of hypophysoma, craniopharyngioma and other sellar region tumors through different channels and passages, tumorectomy in cerebellopontine angle of giant acoustic neuroma, meningeoma, cholesteatoma, etc., meningeoma on skull base, medulla oblongate tumor, tumor in upper spinal cord, intraspinal tumor resection and so on. The Department is skilled in the deep brain nucleus mass destruction and DBS to treat Parkinson’s disease, epileptogenic focus resection and callosum dissection to treat refractory epilepsy, microvascular decompression of prosopalgia and hemi-facial spasm as well as other functional neurosurgeries. Its treatment of critical and severe craniocerebral trauma, hematencephalon and complex hydrocephalus has reached the domestic leading level. Postoperative recovery is guaranteed by modernized ICUs. The Department also invested over RMB 30 million Yuan to introduce the internationally leading Leksell Gamma Knife® Perfexion™, which was put into use in May 2016 and can perform almost 600 resection surgeries of intracranial tumor, arteriovenous malformation and douloureux tic with effective results.
Scientific Research Level
Successively the Neurosurgery Department has undertaken nearly 30 research subjects of the National Natural Science Fund and the Provincial and Ministerial science funds with total research grant of RMB 4 million Yuan. It also has published over 400 papers on domestic and foreign journals, and won nearly 20 national, provincial and ministerial awards for science and technology progress, including one Shandong Provincial Top 10 Science and Technology Achievement Award, two 1st prize and four 2nd prize of Outstanding Science and Technology Progress Award of Shandong Province, one 1st prize of National Science and Technology Progress nominated by the MOE, two 2nd prizes of Scientific and technological progress in Chinese Colleges and Universities, one Chinese Medical Science and Technology Award and other awards. The Department has edited or co-edited 15 books. These achievements demonstrate its strong strength and good conditions in scientific research. Prof. Wang Chengwei, the academic leader and doctoral supervisor, concurrently serves as the Director of the Radio-neurosurgery Professional Committee of Shandong Association for the Study of Pain, a Deputy Director of the Neurosurgery Branch of Shandong Provincial Medical Association, a Deputy Director of the Neurosurgeon Branch of Shandong Medical Doctor Association, Vice President of Shandong Stroke Association, and a National Committee Member of the Neuro-Oncology Professional Committee of the Neurosurgeon Branch of Chinese Medical Doctor Association, and a National Committee Member of the Radiation Neurosurgery Branch of World Association of Chinese Neurosurgeons. He also serves as a Member of the World Federation of Neurological Surgeons (WFNS), as well as Deputy Editor-in-Chief, Standing Editorial Board Member or Editorial Board Member of multiple professional journals. He has received 10 national, provincial and ministerial honors and awards.
Academic Exchange and Cooperation
The Neurosurgery Department has conducted extensive cooperation and academic exchange with foreign universities and research units as Aarhus University, Denmark, Karolinska Medical Institute in Sweden, University of Toronto, Canada, University of Calgary, Canada, Hopkins Hospital, USA. It also established cooperative relationship with Laboratory of Molecular Biology, School of Medicine, Shandong University and Tumor Center of Qilu Hospital of Shandong University for effective cooperation, and convened many national and provincial academic conferences to build stable domestic and foreign academic exchange channels. The Neurosurgery Department has dispatched more than 10 experts in succession to USA, Canada, Sweden and other countries for advanced study, and presided over, attended and made speeches on many world-class, international and domestic academic conferences.
