The Nutrition Department of the Second Hospital of Shandong University was established in 2007. After the unremitting efforts of the department staff, they have extensively studied and absorbed advanced professional theories and technologies at home and abroad. It takes enteral nutrition support for critically ill patients and perioperative nutrition support as its key medical works, regards the nutrition metabolism and support of diabetic patients, tumor patients and surgical trauma as its scientific research direction, and carries out nutrition research and nutrition education for the public at the same time. It has now formed relatively complete specialties with its own characteristics, and the Nutrition Department is playing an increasingly important role in clinical comprehensive treatment. At present, the Nutrition Department consists of the Nutrition Outpatient, the Community Nutrition Outpatient, the Enteral Nutrition Preparation Room, the Nutritious Diet Center and other institutions. The building area is about 780 square meters.

Medical Members

There are currently 7 medical, technical, nursing, and management personnel, of which 86% are young and middle-aged under the age of 45, and 57% of those have a master’s degree.

The Nutrition Department has 3 young and middle-aged doctors, 1 technician, 2 nurses and 1 management staff, including 3 with intermediate professional titles and 4 with junior professional titles.

Clinical Medicine

 

The Nutrition Department is mainly responsible for nutrition diagnosis and treatment and nutrition education for both inpatients and outpatients, including malnutrition, low weight, senile diseases and other common and frequently-occurring diseases due to diabetes, gestational diabetes, hypertension, coronary heart disease, hyperlipidemia, anemia, gout, obesity, cerebral infarction, gallbladder stones, cholecystitis, hepatic and renal insufficiency fatty liver, liver cirrhosis and other various reasons, as well as trauma, infection, perioperative period, and critical diseases, etc. At the same time, it undertakes nutrition assessment and medical nutrition intervention for healthy people of different ages. The Nutrition Department uses human body measurement, body fat determination, biochemical testing and other methods to evaluate the nutritional status of patients, and determines the nutrition therapeutic regimen through the computer nutrition software system. It carries out nutritional treatment, nutritional support, and metabolic conditioning for inpatients through the gastrointestinal tract, and uses scientific methods for evaluation and analysis. Combined with clinical signs, it formulates individualized and reasonable dietary components, nutritional standards and enteral nutrition therapeutic regimen for the patients. It has resolved the protein malnutrition or protein-heat malnutrition problems for many critically ill patients during the perioperative period, or with chronic illness and physical failure, which guarantees the treatment and rescue of critically ill patients. It helps many critically ill patients to achieve the stability of the body environment, restore normal metabolic operation, enhance disease resistance, and achieve the goal of speedy recovery. 

 

Scientific Research Level

 

The Nutrition Department has published 5 papers in relevant medical journals, and it is seeking the fund support from the Youth Science Foundation.

 

Academic Exchange and Cooperation

The Nutrition Department has sent outstanding young doctors to participate in domestic and provincial nutrition academic conferences, and they have delivered conference addresses. It has established good cooperative relations with famous domestic nutrition departments and experts, and promoted academic development.
