Founded in 1997, the Ophthalmology Department of the Second Hospital of Shandong University has become a specialty with unique features, distinct academic style and high reputation at home and abroad and outstanding contribution to the development of ophthalmology inChinaattributing to the unremitting efforts of all members in the Ophthalmology Department. The Department was granted with the right to award the master's degree in 2001, identified as MOH Clinical Pharmacology Base, established the Shandong University Ophthalmology Center and approved by MOH to establish the Key Specialty of Shandong Province in 2015. In 2017, the Department was granted with the right to award the doctoral degree.
The Ophthalmology Department has divisions including outpatient, dispensary, etc. occupying a building area of about 1,300m2.
Medical Members
The Department currently has 20 members devoted to medicine, teaching and research, including 6 professors and 6 associate professors. Members at middle and young age below 45 years old account for 70%. All general practitioners are granted with a doctoral or master’s degree, and the members in the Department holding a doctoral degree account for 75%.
4 middle-aged and young doctors of the Department are promoted to associate professor as exceptions.
Clinical Medicine
The Specialty is at international advanced level and domestic leading level in cataract, proved by the fact that it has applied techniques such as cataract phacoemulsification and intraocular lens implantation earlier in the world and firstly in China.
In recent years, the Specialty has carried out in-depth, meticulous and characteristic study of cataract, fundi disease, glaucoma, pediatric strabismus/amblyopia, pediatric fundi disease, orbital disease, lacrimal apparatus diseases, eye traumas and ophthalmic plastic surgery, etc.
Scientific Research Level
The Ophthalmology Department has undertaken nearly 20 research subjects of the state, the province, the ministries and the commissions with total research grant exceeding RMB 3million Yuan, and published over 100 papers on domestic and foreign journals, obtained more than 10 science and technology progress awards at the province and ministerial level, and edited or co-edited over 20 books, demonstrating its strong strength and good conditions in scientific research. The academic leader Prof. Zhang Han is a famous ophthalmologist inChina, who concurrently takes more than 10 additional posts in domestic and foreign academic groups and serves as the deputy director, standing editorial board member or editorial board member of more than 10 journals.

The Ophthalmology Department has successively dispatched over 10 experts toSweden,Italy,UKand other countries for advanced study, attended and presided over, attended and made speeches on world, international and domestic academic conferences.The Department has successively invited experts from Sweden, America and other countries for academic exchange, through which, good cooperative relations are established and academic development is promoted.
