The E.N.T. Department of the Second Hospital of Shandong University is the granting unit of doctoral and master’s degree of Shandong University and a characteristic specialty mainly cultivated and supported by the Hospital. At present, the Department is the E.N.T. Key Laboratory of National Health Commission of the People’s Republic of China and has 58 members, including 25 medical staffs, 26 nursing staffs, 6 technicians and 6 secretaries of scientific research. The 25 doctors consist of 9 chief physicians, 3 associate chief physicians, 7 attending doctors and several resident doctors. Among whom, 3 are doctoral supervisor and 2 are master supervisor. The 26 nursing staffs in the Department include 5 supervisor nurses and 13 nurses.

　Otology: the academic leader of the Department is Prof. Xu Anting, a famous otologist in China. In recent years, the Specialty has conquered many difficulties in the diagnosis and treatment of difficult, complicated and stubborn diseases, and achieved the advanced professional level in the province and the country. At present, the Department consists of Audiosurgery Surgery and Otological Medicine. The Audiosurgery Surgery is mainly responsible for various types of tympanitis surgeries, cochlear implantation, audiosurgery minimally invasive endoscopic surgery, otoplasty, lateral skull base surgery, dizziness surgery, etc. The Otological Medicine takes charges of various types of epicophosis and tinnitus, such as sudden deafness, noise-induced hearing loss, early stage of large vestibular syndrome, genetic epicophosis, etc. as well as diseases related to dizziness, including otolithiasis, Meniere disease, vestibular neuritis, motion sickness, etc. The Department is the first one performing cochlear implantation (at present, the Department is the fixed-point unit of cochlear implantation in Shandong Province), total middle ear reconstruction, arthrossteopedic minimally invasive endoscopic surgery and lateral skull base surgery, etc., and is always at domestic leading level. It has obtained the Outstanding Science and Technology Progress Award of Shandong Province and extensively popularized and applied the techniques in and out of the Province. To provide better diagnosis and treatment service for patients, the Department has set up a domestic first-rate hearing testing center, temporal bone anatomy laboratory and epicophosis gene laboratory, and opened specialist outpatients for dizziness and epicophosis, etc.

　Nasology: the Department director Zhang Daliang is the first rhinologist using nasal endoscope for diagnosis and treatment in the Province. Professor Zhang is also the first one performing some highly difficult surgeries involving eyes, nose and nasal skull base, including nasal endoscopic minimally invasive adenoidectomy, cerebrospinal fluid rhinorrhea repair, decompression of optic nerve canal, rhinodacryocystostomy, resection of nasopharyngeal angiofibroma, nose endoscopic resection of benign/malignant tumors in the nasal skull base (such chordoma and craniopharyngioma resection). He has taken the lead in the Province to introduce USA Philips Respironics PSG monitoring equipment and pressure titration equipment and establish the Sleep Laboratory. Prof. Shi Li, the academic leader of Nasology, concurrently serves as the director of Allergic Reaction Branch of Shandong Provincial Medical Association. In the last year, the Allergic Disease Outpatient of the Second Hospital of Shandong University was set up and equipped with domestically leading allergen detection equipment and a reasonable medical echelon. The Department has set up the first provincial standard demonstration outpatient for specific immunotherapy in Shandong Province to guarantee the implementation of standardized diagnosis, treatment and therapeutic regimen for allergic diseases. Through training and guide of allergic doctors from grassroot hospitals, the technology is popularized and applied in the Province as a model, achieving domestic leading level.

Throat, Head and Neck Surgery: in 1980s, the Department took the lead in the province to perform carbon dioxide laser surgery for throat and achieved significant results. At present, its laser surgeries maintain a leading position in China and partially reach international advanced level. The Department is capable of laryngoscopic laser resection of complicated polyp of vocal cord, papilloma of larynx, vocal leukoplakia, early laryngocarcinoma, etc. to avoid cervicotomy. In respect of repair of head and neck tissue defects, the Department is skilled at using various flaps, including musculocutaneous flap and visceral tissue flap, to repair large-area tissue defects, such as huge laryngeal fistula and pharyngeal fistula neoplasties, etc., which can not only effectively improve the surgical therapeutic effects of laryngocarcinoma and hypopharyngeal carcinoma, but also significantly improve the postoperative life of quality. The Department can perform various types of neck dissections, and its traditional advantageous technique is hypopharyngeal carcinoma surgery, in which, throat functions are preserved at a rate leading in China. The Department is responsible for the rescue of complicated and risky patients with tracheal and esophageal foreign bodies in most of the surrounding areas. Prof. Fan Xianliang has in-depth and meticulous insights and study of obstructive sleep apnea-hypopnea syndrome (OSAHS), and is the first implementer of polysomnography and surgical treatment of pediatric sleep-disordered breathing under endoscope in the province. He also has abundant experience in adult uvula palatopharyngoplasty(UPPP), hyoid suspension surgery and reasonable application of breathing machine. In 2013, the Department took the lead in China to apply Leonardo Da Vinci surgical robot System in laryngocarcinoma and hypopharyngeal carcinoma surgery with certain popularity and influence in China.

　For teaching, the Department shoulders the 7-year and 5-year teaching tasks in Shandong University School of Stomatology and the 6-year and 5-year teaching tasks of clinical medicine specialty, and is responsible for the internship of exchange students, some international students and national defense students from Weifang Medical University, Binzhou Medical University and Jining Medical University, etc. In 2013, the elective of nasal endoscopic technique and sleep-disordered breathing was added to guide students who have chosen their specialty in advance to expand new spaces. While thoroughly practicing the scientific development outlook and cultivating high-level innovative outstanding talents sound in morality and broad in learning, the Department has successively held the Otolaryngology & Head and Neck Surgery Latest Progress Workshop of the Provincial Continued Education for 4 years, and carried out cutting-edge academic exchange in cochlear implantation, surgery with Da Vinci Surgical System, immunotherapy for allergic disease, minimally invasive diagnosis of thyroid surgery, and expanded application of carbon dioxide laser to further increase the Department’s influence in China. The Department also has cultivated some backbone staffs of the specialty in their prime while each major specialty is gradually establishing a solid talent echelon. The Department is trying to provide a good development environment for the middle-aged and young backbone staffs and the construction of each sub-specialty is undergoing actively, steadfastly and orderly.

For scientific research, we have abundant medical resources for otolaryngology &head and neck surgery and the construction of a specimen base lays a solid foundation for the scientific research and construction of the specialty laboratory. In the last 7 years, members from the Department have undertaken 6 projects of the National Natural Science Fund and 8 projects initiated by provincial funds, and public 17 high-level SCI papers with 3 points or higher. The accumulated IF has exceeded 100. The Department has been invited to and made speeches on EAACI (European Academy of Allergy and Clinical Immunology), Rhinology World Congress and such other internationally famous conferences for many times, and awarded with related honorary titles.
