The Pain Management Department of the Second Hospital of Shandong University is a specialized department focusing on the diagnosis and treatment of chronic pain diseases. It is one of the earliest larger-scale specialized departments in Chinese general hospitals that have carried out diagnosis and treatment business for pains. For chronic neuralgia, senile degenerative pain, postoperative pain, cancer pain and other refractory pains, it has formed diversified and multi-modal treatment methods of medicine, minimally invasive surgery, and pain health management. Based on clear pain diagnosis and comprehensive treatment with the precise and minimally invasive characteristics, as well as the safe and excellent curative effect, it has formed specialties with its own characteristics and academic styles. It has a fairly high reputation both inside and outside Shandong Province, and has made outstanding contributions to the development of the pain management specialty in China.

There are 3 doctors with associate senior titles or above in the Pain Management Department. Those with a doctoral degree or a master’s degree account for 90% of the total number of the Pain Management Department. Many young and middle-aged doctors of the Pain Management Department have learning and training experiences in famous pain medicine specialties at home and abroad. Among them, one doctor has served as the Medical Group Leader of the National Key Clinical Pain Medicine Specialty for a long time, and one doctor once worked as a visiting scholar in UK. The academic leader and young and middle-aged doctors have a number of stable research directions. It has established close cooperative relations with many Pain Medicine Centers at home and abroad in the fields of clinical and scientific research cooperation, information sharing, and personnel training, etc. Many doctors of the Pain Management Department have won honors and awards of Shandong University and Shandong Province.
Clinical Medicine
This discipline is at the international advanced level and the domestic leading level in the comprehensive treatment and pain management and research fields of chronic, complex, and refractory pain diseases. It is one of the earliest in the world and the first in China to develop minimally invasive surgery techniques for the adjustment, ablation, and restoration of chronic pain caused by damaged nerves, injured or degenerated tissues. In the fields of the pain management of chronic diseases, tranquillity care, as well as pain diagnosis and treatment with integrated Chinese and Western medicines, it is also at the leading level in China.
In recent years, the Pain Management Department has conducted in-depth, meticulous and characteristic study on the pathogenesis of neuralgia, the analysis of the pathogenic factors of degenerative pain, and the big data analysis on the treatment methods of spine and myofascial soft tissue pain, and has continuously made achievements and progress.
