The Pathology Department of the Second Hospital of Shandong University develops from the Department of Pathology of Cheeloo University School of Medicine. In 1935, Professor Hou Baozhang, one of the famous pioneers and founders of China’s pathology, served as the first Director of the Department of Pathology of Cheeloo University. From the beginning of its establishment to 2011, the Pathology Department of our hospital was established and leaded to conduct the work by the Pathology Teaching and Research Office of Shandong University School of Medicine which inherits the Department of Pathology of Cheeloo University School of Medicine. Clinical Medicine

The Pathology Department is at the leading level in China in the field of pathological diagnosis of the digestive tract, especially the pathological diagnosis of chronic gastritis and early cancer of the digestive tract. It takes the lead in adopting the international Update Sydney System for chronic gastritis, combined with the national consensus. It adopts a quantitative report that combines tables and texts, which is intuitive and clear, reflects the pathological conditions of each biopsy tissue, and provides a reliable, detailed and intuitive reference for the clinic. It has been widely praised by pathology and gastroenterology experts both inside and outside Shandong Province. It is the first in China to carry out a series of standardized technologies such as the conventional large microtomy technology for pathology diagnosis, serial section and multilayer stretched preparation technique for gastrointestinal biopsy specimen, standardized pathological fixation, sampling, embedding, section and staining of ESD specimens for early cancer of the digestive tract and standardized pathological diagnosis, etc. Since 2005, gastrointestinal biopsy pathology has been using continuous ultra-long sections of specimens and performing full-slice stretched preparation to maximize the coverage of the lesions and display the lesions at multiple levels, so as to avoid the loss of diagnostic information of small specimens. The early diagnosis and treatment of early gastrointestinal cancer jointly carried out by the Pathology Department and the Gastroenterology Department has achieved remarkable results. The diagnostic rate of early cancer has reached 50%, and the case detection rate of early cancer has reached 2%, which is at the leading level in China. From 2014 to 2015, it sent staff twice to the Shizuoka Cancer Center in Japan to study the pathological diagnosis of early gastrointestinal cancer. In 2015, it successfully passed the on-site evaluation by experts of the National Health and Family Planning Commission of the “Sino-Japanese Joint Training Pilot Project for Digestive Endoscopy Clinical Diagnosis and Pathology” and was highly praised by review experts. The Pathology Department has begun to become a regional pathological diagnosis center for early gastrointestinal cancer. It accepts pathological consultations for early gastrointestinal cancer both inside and outside Shandong Province. It has completed many sessions of training in early gastrointestinal cancer pathology diagnosis for advanced students and achieved good results. In addition, the Pathology Department also has sent relevant doctors to study in famous hospitals at home and abroad, and formed a sub-specialty system featuring kidney biopsy pathology, transplant kidney biopsy pathology, liver aspiration biopsy pathology, prostate aspiration biopsy pathology, etc.
