Introduction to the Children’s Medical Center

After over 2 decades’ rapid development, the Children’s Medical Center of the Second Hospital of Shandong University has become a discipline with solid foundation, reasonable talent echelon, strong technical force, and benign development of medicine, teaching and research. Featured with first-rate medical equipment, cutting-edge diagnosis and treatment technology and top-ranking service awareness, the Center has been rated as a key specialty of Shandong Province.

The outpatient clinic provides service all the year round, with experts on duty even during holidays. The division of specialties in the center has been well-established, and the center consists of four departments and the Child Healthcare Outpatient, with 147 fixed beds available. The First Department of Pediatrics located in the Second Ward of South Building of Guangzhi majors in cardiovascular and neurological specialties; The Second Department of Pediatrics located in the Third Ward of South Building of Guangzhi is mainly specializing in respiratory, endocrinology and hematology; the Third Department of Pediatrics located in the Third Ward of North Building of Guangzhi is mainly responsible for nephrology and pediatric intensive care (PICU); the Neonatal Intensive Care Unit (NICU) is located in the Sixth Ward of Chongli Building. The Center has developed many characteristic pediatric specialties focusing on neonatal, PICU, neurology, respiratory, nephrology and immunology, hematology, endocrinology, cardiovascular science and child healthcare. The Center has more than 200 medical members, including 58 on-duty doctors, 11 chief physicians, 10 associate chief physicians and 20 attending doctors, among which, 12 with the doctoral degree, 47 with the master’s degree, 3 doctoral supervisors and 5 master supervisors.

Prof. Wang Yibiao, the vice president of the hospital, as well as a doctoral supervisor, is a famous expert inside and outside Shandong Province. He is the member of Pediatrics Branch of Chinese Medical Association and the vice director of Shandong Pediatrics Association. Prof. Xue Jiang, a famous neonatal specialist inside and outside Shandong Province, is currently the director of the Children’s Medical Center and the Neonatal Department. He is the chairman of Neonatal Doctor Branch of Shandong Medical Doctor Association, the deputy group leader of Neonatal Group of Pediatrics Branch of Shandong Provincial Medical Association, and the vice director of Branch of Pubertal Development of Shandong Medical Doctor Association. The former director of the center, Prof. Wang Peirong, the former director of this department, is a medical doctor, chief physician, doctoral supervisor and has a doctoral degree. He is the vice director of Pediatrics Branch of Shandong Provincial Medical Association, who has postdoctoral research and work experience in internal medicine of Washington University School of Medicine in the United States. Prof. Wang Peirong insists on providing medical treatment after retirement.

Under the leadership of Prof. Xue Jiang, the Neonatal Department has developed rapidly. As one of the first provincial-level critical neonatal treatment centers in Shandong Province, it has first-class treatment capabilities and is responsible for the task of critical neonatal transport in the whole province and surrounding areas. At present, the department has 3 chief physicians, 1 associate chief physician, 8 attending doctors. The department is equipped with advanced center monitoring system, a standard 100,000-level laminar flow air purification system, high-end multifunctional incubators, various invasive and noninvasive breathing machines, nitric oxide (NO) treatment apparatus, bedside blood filtration machines, percutaneous TCM CO2 monitors, mobile NICU ambulances, bedside ultrasound, etc. The department supports technologies of CRRT, PDA ligation, mild hypothermia therapy, cerebral function test, peritoneal dialysis, bedside ROP treatment, bronchoscopic examination, PICC and umbilical arteriovenous catheterization. Meanwhile, it offers characteristic services of bedside kangaroo care, neonatal touching, day-care unit, family return visit and health lecture. Patients after discharge are long-term followed up and guided for rehabilitation. The department can fully meet the diagnosis and treatment demands of extremely premature infants and various risky and sever neonates, and has successfully rescued many complicated and difficult neonatal cases, especially the case of quadruplets from Heze, which has aroused a strong response in the society. The department has successively won honorary titles of “Shandong Province Worker Pioneer”, “Shandong University Youth Civilization”, etc.

The Pediatric Critical Care Department is charged by Zhang Zhaohua, who is a chief physician, a master supervisor and an associate professor. The department now has 1 chief physician, 1 associate chief physician, and 3 attending doctors. It is equipped with advanced multi-functional monitoring equipment, bedside ultrasonic machine, invasive and noninvasive breathing machine, bedside blood filtration machine and ECMO to provide various advanced life support, including mechanical ventilation, continuous renal replacement therapy, plasmapheresis, and extracorporeal membrane oxygenation. The specialty mainly receives and admits acute, critical and sever pediatric patients with cardiac arrest, shock, respiratory failure, heart failure, pulmonary arterial hypertension, severe arrhythmia, acute renal insufficiency, gastrointestinal dysfunction and massive gastrointestinal hemorrhage, severe endocrine and metabolic disorders, water-electrolyte and acid-base balance disorders, sepsis and multiple organ dysfunction, etc. As one of the first batch of critical pediatric and neonatal rescue centers in Shandong Province, the department is responsible for the mission of rescuing critical children in Jinan City and surrounding areas.

The Neurology Department now has 2 chief physicians, 2 associate chief physicians and 2 attending doctors. Prof. Sun Ruopeng, the famous expert, is one of the first batch of “Qilu Famous Doctors” of Shandong Province, as well as a winner of the first “Medical Achievement Award” for pediatricians in China. He enjoys special government allowances of the State Council. Prof. Sun Ruopeng is now the consultant of Neurology Group of Pediatrics Branch of Chinese Medical Association, standing committee member of China Association Against Epilepsy, honorary director of the Special Committee of Pediatrics of Shandong Provincial Medical Association, the consultant of Pediatrics Branch of Shandong Medical Doctor Association and the president of Shandong Association Against Epilepsy. Prof. Guo Qinghui is the vice director of the first Department of Pediatrics, and Prof. Li Zhao[1] xia is the leader of the Neurology Group. The specialist group has abundant experience in pediatric epilepsy, encephalitis, attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD), tic disorder, emotional and sleep disorders, peripheral neuropathy, myopathy, hypoxic-ischemic encephalopathy, intellectual retardation, diagnosis and treatment of refractory epilepsy by ketogenic diet, precision examinations for diagnosis and treatment of pediatric psychological intervention and pediatric nervous system disease. The Neurology Department is equipped with a professional EEG team, and can accomplish conventional EEG, video EEG, 24h dynamic EEG, NAP text and other related examinations to assist in the diagnosis and treatment of neurological diseases.

Prof. Zhao Fei as well as a chief physician, is in charge of the Respiratory Department. The department now has 1 chief physician, 1 associate chief physician and 2 attending doctors. It can implement pulmonary function test, fiber bronchoscopic inspection and treatment, etc., and has abundant clinical experience in the treatment of trachitis, pneumonia, pediatric asthma, recurrent respiratory tract infections (RRTI), chronic cough, and anaphylactic rhinitis, etc.

Prof. Wang Yulong is in charge of the Renal Rheumatism Department, who also is an associate chief physician. The department has 2 chief physicians, 1 associate chief physician and 2 attending doctors, who have rich experience in treatment of pediatric renal rheumatism diseases, including various types of nephritides, nephrotic syndrome, urinary tract infection, hematuria and proteinuria with unknown cause, allergic purpura, systemic lupus erythematosus (SLE), juvenile idiopathic arthritis, dermatomyositis, Behce’s disease, Sjogren’s syndrome, large, medium and small vasculitis. Prof. Wang Peirong first carried out renal puncture biopsy in Shandong Province in 1989, and has been engaged in clinical and pathology-relevant research.

The Hematology Department is charged by the associate chief physician Zhang Tai’e, and has 2 associate chief physicians and 2 attending doctors. The department has rich experience in treatment of childhood leukemia, anemia caused by various causes, immune thrombocytopenia and solid tumors in children.

The associate chief physician Liang Shuang from the Endocrinology Department is devoted to the clinic and scientific research of pediatric endocrine diseases. She has unique insights into the diagnosis and treatment of short stature, precocious puberty, obesity, diabetes, thyroid disease and other pediatric endocrine diseases. The department has organized many gratuitous consultation activities that well received by the patients and their families.

The Cardiovasology Department is a characteristic specialty of the Hospital, and its person-in-charge is the chief physician Wang Zhenxian, who is a famous expert in Shandong Province. The department now has 3 chief physicians and 1 associate chief physician. The tream members have superb technologies and can accurately diagnose various difficult and complicated congenital heart diseases. They can perform congenital heart disease interventional surgeries against atrial septal defect, ventricular septal defect, patent ductus arteriosus, pulmonary stenosis, etc. Prof. Hao Fangzhi took the lead to carry out Percutaneous Catheter Interventional Technique in treating contingent heart diseases in 1987. Interventional surgery is welcomed by the majority of parents for its small trauma and high success rate.

The Gastrointestinal Department has 1 chief physician and 1 attending doctor. They have rich experience in diagnosis and treatment of children’s gastrointestinal diseases, such as chronic gastritis, gastrointestinal bleeding, gastrointestinal polyps, Crohn’s disease in children, ulcerative colitis, HP infection, etc. The relevant diagnosis and treatment of digestive endoscopy will be carried out soon.

The Child’s Health Care Department now has 1 chief physician, 3 attending doctors, 1 technician, and 2 nurses. Currently, the department can provide physical examination for children between 0 and 6 years old, and achieve all-round evaluation of growth and development, nutritional status and neuropsychological development level, etc. Based on the above-mentioned examination and evaluation results, the department can carry out early education training and guide to sufficiently tap babies’ potential, and can develop systematic and reasonable diagnosis and treatment plan for deviational children from early discovery, evaluation, prevention guide, treatment and rehabilitation training. The department offers the following characteristic projects: follow-up of high-risk children, height promotion of children, evaluation and rehabilitation training of abnormal motor and language development, early intervention and rehabilitation guide of common morphological abnormalities such as X-legs, O-legs, and torticollis, prevention, diagnosis and treatment of allergic diseases, pediatric attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD), autism spectrum disorders, tic disorder, children’s emotional behavior, etc.

 In recent years, the Children’s Medical Center of the Second Hospital of Shandong University has made remarkable achievements in scientific research that many subjects at international advanced level. The center has been granted with more than 10 awards at the bureau level or higher, and has undertaken 1 national subject, more than 10 provincial subjects and over 10 bureau-level subjects. The center published more than 10 papers on international famous journals and national core journals, and wrote many pediatric monographs, such as Pediatric Disease Therapeutics and Pediatric Congenital Cardiology, winning unanimous praises from domestic experts.
