As one of the earliest professional specialties starting treating patients in 1997, the Plastic/Burn Surgery of the Second Hospital of Shandong University has kept on improving its clinical treatment level via years’ accumulation of clinical and foundational scientific research experience, so as to maintain its treatment level at a leading position in the Province, build its unique characteristics, win trusts from patients and build a good brand. The Department was granted with the right to award the master’s degree of Shandong University in 1999 and the right to award the doctoral degree in 2002, identified as a key discipline of the Hospital in 2004 and one of the Top 100 Plastic Cosmetology Organizations Trusted by Consumers in China in 2005, the key discipline of Shandong Province during the “11th five-year plan” in 2006, the “China Top 10 Plastic Brands” in 2008, and the Key Discipline of Shandong Province for Enhanced Construction in 2011. The Department enjoys a high academic status in China and is the trailblazer and leader of cosmetology and plastic/burn surgery in Shandong Province

Medical Members

While growing and expanding, the Department builds up a medical technical team in a reasonable echelon with strong technical strength and fighting strength. The Department currently has 12 members devoted to medical treatment, teaching and research, including 1 professor, 5 associate professors, 2 attending doctors, 3 doctors and 1 senior technician of medical cosmetology, 1 doctoral supervisor, 1 postdoctor, 6 holders of a doctoral degree and 5 holders of a master’s degree. For age structure, 1 member is between 50 and 60, 10 are between 30 and 50, and 1 is below 30. Many members of the Department take additional posts as the director, vice director, standing committee member, council director and editorial board member of domestic and foreign academic organizations. The Department has cultivated more than 50 doctors and masters, and over 200 advanced students, plastic surgeons and students as well as 10 doctoral degree candidates, master degree candidates and advanced students.

Clinical Medicine

The Department offers cosmetology, plastic and burn treatment, and focuses on the medical treatment, teaching and scientific research of surgery plastic cosmetology, minimally invasive plastic cosmetology, injection cosmetology, laser cosmetology, wound cosmetology, cicatrix prevention, various repair and reconstruction of acute and chronic wounds and burn treatment. It is at domestic leading level in the comprehensive prevention and treatment of scar and keloid, fine cosmetology surgery, mini-plastic surgeries (including injection cosmetology), figure sculpture by fat transplantation, laser medical cosmetology, reconstruction of ear, nose and other organs, breast cosmetic surgery, craniofacial plastic, repair and reconstruction of acute and chronic wounds, cosmetology plastic for body surface diseases and burn treatment. The Department has the internationally advanced equipments, machinery and teaching instruments for laser liposuction, craniofacial plastic, dermatic cosmetology, and plastic cosmetology to better meet the needs of diagnosis, treatment and teaching. Throughout the past years, the Department has proposed the theory of tumorigenesis of keloid, scar prevention dynamic therapy, etc., and established many new technologies including keloid suicide gene therapy, composite skin application in wound repair, double-ring, single-pedicle reduction plasty for gynecomastia, local anesthesia for swelling in surface surgery, and comprehensive transplantation of autologous adipose derived stem cells.

In recent years, the Department has carried out in-depth, meticulous and characteristic study of minimally invasive plastic cosmetology (laser cosmetology, injection cosmetology, etc.), fine surgerycosmetology, body fat transplantation and management, microsurgical flap transplantation, treatment of chronic refractory wounds, and achieved excellent results.

Scientific Research Level

　In the last 3 years, the Department has undertaken over 10 scientific research projects initiated by the National Natural Science Fund, the Shandong Provincial Natural Science Fund and the Shandong Provincial Doctoral Fund, published a series of articles on SCI and domestic core journals, won two 2nd prizes of national science and technology progress and more than 10 provincial and ministerial awards. At present, 6 research subjects of the National Natural Science Fund are undergoing. The Department is the chief editor of Contemporary Scar Medicine, the first monograph about Scar treatment in China, Introduction to Tissue Engineering and Trauma and Burn Plastic Surgery Ward Checking Records, as well as the associate editor or co-editor of more than 20 books and monographs. The current academic leader Prof. Jiang Duyin attaches great importance to the inheritance and upholding of the outstanding traditions of the Plastic/Burn Surgery. Prof. Jiang Duyin concurrently takes the following additional posts: the director of Rescue Medical Association of China Association for Disaster Prevention and China Association for Disaster &Emergency Rescue Medicine, the standing committee member of Burn and Trauma Branch of Gerontological Society of China, the member of the Special Committee of Burn and Trauma of Chinese Medical Association, the vice director of Trauma Branch of Shandong Provincial Medical Association, Emergency Medicine Branch of Shandong Association of Integrative Medicine, Emergency Medicine Branch of Shandong Medical Doctor Association, the member of Burn and Plastic Branch of Shandong Provincial Medical Association, the standing committee member of Poisoning and Occupational Diseases Branch of Shandong Medical Doctor Association, and the expert of Expert Library of Practice License Examination of Medical Institutions in Shandong Province (Emergency and Burn & Plastic), and the editorial board member of Chinese Journal of Injury Repair and Wound Healing (Electronic Version), Journal of Shandong University(Health Science), Chinese Medicinal Biotechnology, Journal of Chinese Clinical Physician (Electronic Version) and Journal of Clinical Rehabilitative Tissue Engineering Research, etc. The academic backbones, including Associate Professor Liu Zhenzhong, are good at leveraging their advantages to contribute to the sustainable development of the Department, while many young doctors are working hard and progressively and making a figure.

Academic Exchange and Cooperation

Plastic/Burn Surgery has successively dispatched 5 experts to Shanghai Ninth People’s Hospital, Plastic Surgery Hospital, CAMS and other domestic first-class plastic surgery centers for advanced studies, presided over, attended and made speeches on many world, international and domestic academic conferences. The Department has invited many experts from USA, France, and Israel for academic exchange, through which, good cooperative relationship is established and academic development is promoted.
