The Rehabilitation Medicine Department of the Second Hospital of Shandong University was established in 1994. In 2004, it was the first to establish a rehabilitation medicine ward in Shandong Province. After two generations of unremitting efforts, it has now formed specialties with its own characteristics and academic styles. It has a fairly high popularity at home and aboard, and has made outstanding contributions to the development of the rehabilitation medicine in China. In 2004 and 2011, it was respectively granted with the rights to award the master’s degree and the doctoral degree. It is the second doctoral program of rehabilitation medicine in Shandong Province. In 2014, it was evaluated as a Key Discipline of Shandong Province. There are 50 beds in the Rehabilitation Medicine Department, and it is routinely opened with the Physical Therapy Room, Occupational Therapy Room, Speech Therapy Room, Functional Assessment Room, and Rehabilitation Engineering room. The total outpatient treatment area of the ward is 1,200 square meters.
Medical Members
The Department now owns 11 members devoted to medicine, teaching and research, including 1 doctoral supervisor, 1 master’s supervisor, 1 professor, and 1 associate professor. Among them, 80% are the young and middle-aged under the age of 45, 30% are those with a doctorate degree, and 100% are those with a master’s degree or above.
Two young and middle-aged doctors of the Rehabilitation Medicine Department have been evaluated as top-notch talents at the hospital level. The academic leader and the doctoral supervisor have multiple stable research directions. It is the second doctoral program of rehabilitation medicine in Shandong Province, with 6 doctoral students and 11 master students having completed their studies, as well as 10 doctoral students and 2 master students at present.
Clinical Medicine
In the field of neurorehabilitation and orthopedic rehabilitation, this discipline is at the advanced level in China and the leading level in Shandong Province. It routinely conducts cerebrovascular disease rehabilitation, orthopedic disease rehabilitation, pediatric cerebral palsy rehabilitation, critical diseases rehabilitation, and community rehabilitation. After decades of experience, it has accumulated rich clinical experience and established a systematic rehabilitation evaluation process of its own. It can rationally use various treatment techniques, such as PNF, Bobath, Motor Relearning Programme, etc, to carry out systematic rehabilitation training for patients. It has successively carried out special techniques such as speech assessment and training system, dysphagia treatment, Partial Body Weight Support System training, etc. It is the first in China to develop the Platelet Rich Therapy, 12h Low-frequency Continuous Electrophotoluminescence Technology, and has made some achievements.
Scientific Research Level
In the past five years, the Rehabilitation Medicine Department has undertaken 4 provincial and ministerial-level scientific research projects, and won 4 provincial and ministerial-level scientific research awards. It has obtained scientific research funds of RMB 200,000 Yuan, published 8 SCI papers, and achieved good results. However, the level of scientific research of it is still not high enough, and it hasn’t undertaken the research work of major national research projects independently. We will further integrate superior resources, promote scientific and technological cooperation and exchanges at home and abroad, comprehensively improve scientific research capabilities, improve the quality of scientific research projects and scientific research achievements, and strive to achieve new breakthroughs in scientific and technological innovation.
The Rehabilitation Medicine Department has undertaken 6 national, provincial and ministerial-level research projects, with total scientific research funds of RMB 1 million Yuan. It has published more than 40 papers at home and abroad, won 4 national, provincial and ministerial-level Science and Technology Progress Awards, and leaded and participated in the compiling of more than 10 books. It has strong scientific research strength and good scientific research conditions. As the academic leader, Professor Sun Qiangsan is a famous expert in rehabilitation medicine and physiotherapy in China. He is also the Director of the Rehabilitation Medicine and Physiotherapy Branch of Shandong Provincial Medical Association, a Deputy Director of the Rehabilitation Doctors Branch of Shandong Medical Doctor Association, a Standing Committee Member of the Rehabilitation Doctors Branch of Chinese Medical Doctor Association, a Standing Committee Member of the Cerebrovascular Disease Rehabilitation Professional Committee of Chinese Association of Rehabilitation Medicine, a Member of the Proposition Expert Committee of Doctor’s Practicing Qualification Examination of National Medical Examination Center, a Special Reviewer of “Chinese Journal of Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation”, an Editorial Board Member of “Rehabilitation Assessment”, which is a planned textbook for colleges and universities in the “12th Five-Year Plan”
by the Ministry of Health. He is also the Editor-in-Chief of “Therapeutic Methods of Skeletal Muscle Rehabilitation”, which is a planned textbook for national colleges and universities.
Academic Exchange and Cooperation
The Rehabilitation Medicine Department has sent 2 experts to Italy, the United States and other countries for further study. It has hosted and participated in many international and domestic academic conferences, and delivered conference addresses.
It has invited many experts from the United States and other countries to our hospital for academic exchanges. Through such activities, we established good cooperative relations with them, and promoted academic development.
