Founded in 2003 as the 1st professional organ transplantation center, the Renal Transplantation Department is a key discipline and characteristic specialty of the Hospital, an advanced unit of work style construction, and one of the 1st batches of organizations obtaining organ transplantation permits from MOH. It is also identified as Youth Civilization by Shandong Provincial Committee of the Communist Youth League. The Renal Transplantation Department has an independent transplantation ward with 52 beds and 6 independent ICU beds to meet the special care needs in the preoperative, postoperative and perioperative periods. Auxiliary equipment is complete, including central oxygen inhalation equipment, central negative pressure suction, electrocardiogram monitor, microinjection instrument, noninvasive breathing machine, etc.; an independent transplantation matching laboratory is also available.
Medical Members
The Department currently has 8 members devoted to medicine, teaching and research, including 2 chief physicians, 1 associate chief physician and 4 attending doctors. Members at middle and young age below 45 years old account for 87.5% and 87.5% of the Department members hold a doctoral or master’s degree
Clinical Medicine
The Renal Transformation Department has carried out related clinical and fundamental researches, and accumulated a lot of experience in tissue matching, postoperative immune monitoring, preoperative and post-operative treatment, prevention and treatment of complications, which greatly improves the survivor rate and long-term survival rate. Since the beginning of 2003, nearly 1,000 cases of renal transplantation have been completed. About 100 uremia patients have received renal transplantation every year. The living-relative renal transplantation is strictly implemented in accordance with the regulations of organ transplantation. Up to now, more than 200 cases have been completed successfully with the success rate of transplantation surpassing 99%, showing a good development trend. The number and quality of transplantation rank the 1stin Shandong Province. The 1-year, 3-year and 5-year survival rates of renal transplantation reaches 98%, 92% and 85%. The successful renal transplantation to a 73-year old patient establishes a record of the highest age of successful renal transformation in Shandong Province. Allograft renal transplantation of PRA-positive patients and RH negative patients have been completed, and renal transplantation has been performed for many times. The Department has accumulated rich experience in tissue matching, postoperative immune monitoring, preoperative and postoperative patient treatment, prevention and control of complications, which improves the survivor and long-term survival rate of transplant recipients. Especially, the Department has significant clinical experience of renal transformation to PRA-positive patients, multiple renal transplantation and pneumonia treatment after transplantation. Its technique of renal transplantation is at leading level in the Province and advanced level in China.
The Renal Transplantation Department has been taking the lead in the Province to carry out study and clinical application of tissue matching for renal transplantation. At the beginning of its establishment, the Department has been devoting to the technical research and application of HLA full-gene matching for organ transplantation, and applying the HLA-amino acid residues matching standards. In 2003, it started the technical research of gene chip tissue matching firstly. By establishing genotyping technology up to international standards, antibody screening technology and amino-acid residue matching standards, the Department offers basic guarantee for the clinical effects of high-quality organ transplantation and achieves strict gene matching selection of donor and recipient before transplantation. Ideal amino-acid residue matching is realized for the majority patients, and the transplantation quality is significantly improved
The internationally advanced panel reaction antibody (PRA) testing technology is introduced to eliminate hyperacute rejection and reduce the incidence of acute reject to 5% or less (international range of 20%-25%) by antibody screening
In recent years, the Department has carried out in-depth and meticulous research of transplantation immunity tolerance, individualized immunity therapeutic regimen and DCD, and has made achievements in DCD organ function maintenance, evaluation and postoperative management.
Scientific Research Level
The Renal Transplantation Department has undertaken nearly 6 research subjects of the state, the province, the ministries and the commissions with total research grant of RMB 1million Yuan, published over 20 papers on domestic and foreign journals, won 3 national, provincial and ministerial awards for science and technology progress, and edited or co-edited over 5 books, demonstrating its strong strength and good conditions in scientific research. Prof. Wang Hongwei, the academic leader and famous urinary surgery rental transplantation expert, concurrently serves as the member of the Renal Transplantation Group of Organ Transplantation Branch of Chinese Medical Association, the vice director of Organ Transplantation Branch of Shandong Provincial Medical Association and Organ Transplantation Branch of Shandong Medical Doctor Association, the standing committee member of Surgery Branch of Shandong Medical Doctor Association, and the editorial board member of Current Opinion in Organ Transplantation (Chinese Version) as well as other academic and social posts.

The Renal Transplantation Department has successively dispatched many experts to USA, Sweden and such other countries for advanced study, presided over and attended, and made speeches on many world, international and domestic academic conferences.
