The Respiratory Department of the Second Hospital of Shandong University is a comprehensive professional department integrating medical treatment, teaching, and scientific research. With the purpose of seeking truth and pragmatism, innovation and development, all medical staffs of the Department have been assiduous and steadfast under the leadership of Prof. Wang Wei, the Department Director. Thanks to their ceaseless devotion all the year round, a comparatively sound disciplinary structure and talent echelon are established with considerable reputation at home and abroad. The Department has also made many effective efforts in respiratory endoscopy and laparoscopic techniques to break new grounds in diagnosis, treatment and research of respiratory medicine.
The Department consists of Respiratory Outpatient Clinic, Ward, Respiratory ICU, Pulmonary Function Room, Respiratory Endoscopy Room, Internal Medicine Thoracoscopy Room and other institutions. There are currently 111 beds available.
Medical Members
By so far, the Department has 23 doctors in total, including 3 professors, 4 associate professors, 9 attending doctors, and 7 resident doctors. Amongst them, middle-aged and young doctors below 45 years old account for 75%, and all doctors have a doctoral or master's degree. The Department Director Prof. Wang Wei is currently the director of the Diagnostics Branch and the vice director of the Respiratory Committee of Shandong Provincial Medical Association, the Respiratory Branch, the Allergy Branch and the Internal Medicine Branch of Shandong Medical Doctor Association. Thanks to a reasonable talent echelon, the Department is extensively and clinically experienced in the diagnosis and treatment of early lung cancer, lung tumors, lung infectious diseases, pleural diseases, interstitial lung diseases and critical respiratory diseases, as well as the application of respiratory endoscopy technology. Furthermore, it possesses the master degree program for respiratory medicine of Shandong Province, from which, more than 30 master students are cultivated with the honorary titles of Outstanding Middle-aged and Yong Talents of Professional Technology and Advanced Individuals of Scientific Research of the Second Hospital of Shandong University.
Clinical Medicine
Led by the Department Director, the Respiratory Department of the Second Hospital of Shandong University has attained a high level in clinical application of respiratory endoscopy technology and the diagnosis and treatment of early lung cancer, critical respiratory diseases, lung tumors, lung infectious diseases, pleural diseases, interstitial lung diseases and other respiratory diseases. A lot of effective work has been done in respiratory endoscopy, endoscopic technology, and critical respiratory diseases to achieve advancement in the province and be well-known in China
Always adhering to clinical work guide by cutting-edge theories and equipment, the Respiratory Department has conducted the diagnosis and treatment technologies such as Cardiopulmonary Exercise Test (CPET), Bronchial Dilation Test (BDT), Endobronchial Ultrasound (EBUS), VBN-EBUS-GS-TBLB and medical thoracoscopy technology to improve the diagnosis and treatment level of respiratory diseases constantly.
Scientific Research Level
The Respiratory Department has undertaken over 20 subjects of the state, the province, the ministries, the departments and the bureaus with research grants over RMB 1 million Yuan at present. It has won the second and third prizes from the Provincial Educational Commission, published more than 60 academic papers (many collected by SCI). Its medical members have worked as the editor-in-chief of 3 books and associate editor or co-editor of more than 10 books.
Academic Exchange and Cooperation
The Respiratory Department has dispatched many experts to Canada, USA and other countries for advanced studies, presided over and participated in domestic academic conferences, and made speeches. At present, the Respiratory Department has established amicable cooperation relations with Peking Union Medical College Hospital, Shanghai Zhongshan Hospital, Shanghai Changhai Hospital, and University of Toronto, Canada, and organized many exchange activities such as academic lectures, case exchange, technical training and out-of-hospital group consultation. Since 2015, the New Study Class of Respiratory Endoscopic Diagnosis and Treatment Technology and the Critical Respiratory Diseases Forum has been held once a year, while the Diagnosis Branch of Shandong Medical Doctor Association was founded in 2017 when the 1st academic conference was held, aiming to gradually promote the Department's diagnosis level in the Province. Many doctor-patient communication platforms such as WeChat group and official account have been developed and continuously operated so that patients can better understand the departments and experts of our hospital, and thus the hospital and its experts can better serve the experts. In this way, the departments' influence is improved, the academic exchange between departments is enhanced, and favorable external conditions are created for disciplinary construction.
