The Hematology/Rheumatology & Immunology Department of the Second Hospital of Shandong University was founded by Prof. Tu Zhenhua, one of the pioneers and founders of this specialty in Shandong Province in 1998. After more than 20 years’ efforts and accumulation, a medical team of high level, proficient business skills and reasonable structure is formed. Since its establishment, the Rheumatology & Immunology Department has set up and adhered to the concept of rooting in medical treatment, basing on education and being led by scientific research. The Department carries out work actively, has a technically sophisticated medical team, and carries out extensive studies in the rheumatology and immunology field, covering rheumatoid arthritis, ankylosing spondylitis, systemic lupus erythematosus (SLE), Sjogren’s syndrome, pseudotrichinosis, and vasculitis. The Department is abundantly experienced in the diagnosis and treatment of hematological system diseases related to rheumatology and immunology.

At present, the Department offers 34 beds attended by 9 medical members, including 5 doctors and 4 masters. The staff once studied in Rheumatology & Immunology Department of Peking Union Medical College Hospital, Peking University People’s Hospital and Shanghai Renji Hospital.They also take part-time academic posts in Rheumatology & Immunology Branch of Shandong Provincial Medical Association, Rheumatology & Immunology Branch of Shandong Medical Doctor Association, Rheumatology & Immunology Branch of Shandong Association of Integrative Medicine, Shandong Association of Stem Cells and Biologic Engineering, and Blood Immunology Special Committee of Shandong Society for Immunology.

The Department has gradually developed its technical features of the specialty through the following 4 sub-specialties of Connective Tissue Disease-associated Pulmonary Interstitial Disease Group, Connective Tissue Disease-Associated Pulmonary Hypertension Disease Group, Immuno-Associated Hemocytopenia Group, and Reproductive Immunization Group. Therapies based on biologics or mesenchymal stem cells, plasmapheresis and immunoadsorption have been developed to improve the rescue success rate and cure rate of critical cases. The Department leads to set up the MDT group of pulmonary vascular and right atrium diseases, and the MDT group of sicca syndrome in the hospital, so as to open channels for integrated treatment of complicated diseases andmulti-department consultation and collaborative treatment.

The Department has presided over and participated in many research projects of the ministries, the province and the provincial department, and published over 50 papers on domestic and foreign journals, including more than 20 included by SCI, and co-edited 10 books. It has won the Award of Outstanding Scientific Research Achievements of Universities and Colleges in Shandong Province, and the Shandong Medical Science and Technology Award, etc.
