The "Shandong Provincial Medical Association’s lecture tour on multidisciplinary Standardized diagnosis and treatment for breast diseases", sponsored by Shandong Provincial Medical Association and organized by the Multidisciplinary Joint Committee on Breast Diseases of Shandong Provincial Medical Association and the Second Hospital of Shandong University, was successfully held on August 7. Actively responding to the call of pandemic prevention, the Committee decided to hold the meeting which was previously scheduled as offline through online channels.
The meeting was co-chaired by Professor Liu Yinhua from Peking University First Hospital, who is head of the Breast Surgery Group of Surgery Branch of Chinese Medical Association, and Professor Yu Zhigang, director of the Multidisciplinary Joint Committee on Breast Diseases of Shandong Provincial Medical Association and deputy dean of the Second Hospital of Shandong University.
Professor Liu Yinhua mentioned in his speech that remarkable achievements have been made in the standardized diagnosis and treatment of breast diseases in Shandong province under the joint efforts of medical peers, especially the compilation of the Chinese Medical Association’s Clinical Practice Guidelines for Breast Surgery, during which Professor Yu Zhigang, as a member and secretary of the Breast Surgery Group of Surgery Branch of Chinese Medical Association, has collected or directly provided valuable evidence-based medicine data from Shandong Province, thus proving great contribution of medical staff in Shandong Province to the publication of the Guidelines.
According to Professor Yu Zhigang, promoting specialized and professional diagnosis and treatment of breast diseases, especially the development and cooperation of such related subspecialties as surgery, internal medicine, imaging and pathology, is the prerequisite in the development of modern medical pattern, which is also the original intention of the Multidisciplinary Joint Committee on Breast Diseases of Shandong Provincial Medical Association, and has always been its major work focus. In the future, the Committee will continue to strengthen the cooperation and exchange of relevant disciplines at provincial, national, and international levels, and jointly promote the comprehensive diagnosis and treatment of breast diseases in China.
Zhang Lin, secretary-general of Shandong Provincial Medical Association said in his speech that Shandong Provincial Medical Association has been adhering to the mission of "caring for the people, leading academic development, serving its members, contributing to the society”, and following the proposal of establishing a multidisciplinary joint committee by Bao WenHui, the president of the Association, the Multidisciplinary Joint Committee on Breast Diseases of Shandong Provincial Medical Association, led by Yu Zhigang, has conducted a series of work with the joint efforts of related well-known experts in the province, with the title of "2020 Excellent Multidisciplinary Joint Committee" being awarded. He expressed his hope that the Committee will make persistent efforts to protect people's health.
The academic activities at this meeting, where experts and masters came together, focused on two key themes: "guidelines and consensus" and "MDT case discussion". In combination with the characteristics and advantages of the multidisciplinary joint committee, the organizing committee sincerely invited three top multidisciplinary teams (MTDs) in the field of breast diseases in China as well as the MDT team of Shandong Provincial Medical Association to bring 4 wonderful case discussions.
Professor Liu Yinhua from Peking University First Hospital gave a lecture entitled "Clinical Practice Guidelines for Breast Surgery in China: Chinese Society of Breast Surgery (CSBrS)", introducing the evidence-based clinical practice guidelines for breast surgery while elaborating on the process of writing, organizing and publishing of the guidelines.
Professor Duan Xuening from Peking University First Hospital delivered a lecture entitled “Surgeons’ Opinion on the Incisal Margin of Breast-conserving Surgery”, interpreting the latest views on the incisal margin of breast-conserving surgery, and putting forward his own opinions based on his clinical practice as a surgeon.
MDT teams from the First Hospital of China Medical University led by Professor Jin Feng, director of the Department of Breast Surgery of the First Hospital of China Medical University, the 2nd Affiliated Hospital of Harbin Medical University led by Professor Zhang Jianguo, director of the Department of Breast Surgery of the 2nd Affiliated Hospital of Harbin Medical University, Chinese PLA General Hospital led by Professor Wang Tao, the deputy director of the Department of Breast Oncology of the Fifth Medical Center of Chinese PLA General Hospital, as well as the MDT team from Shandong Provincial Medical Association led by Professor Yu Zhigang, shared "Cases of hormone receptor-positive breast cancer", "Cases of neoadjuvant chemotherapy for HER2-positive early breast cance", "Cases of Triple Negative Breast Cancer", and "Cases ofsalvage chemotherapy for HER2-positive advanced breast cancer" respectively. The four teams complemented each other in analyzing the knowledge of surgery, internal medicine, radiotherapy, imaging and pathology involved in the cases respectively and interpreting the relevant guidelines. Through the crossover analysis, each team shared their own diagnosis and treatment ideas and medication strategies that may be applicable to the cases of other centers based on the drug accessibility of their own center, regional medical insurance policies and other factors, highlighting the advantages and characteristics of each center and well serving the purpose of interaction and mutual improvement.
The view counts of the video of the meeting were more than 2,500 and it has triggered wide discussion. Professor Fan Zhimin from the First Bethune Hospital of Jilin University highly praised the schedule of the meeting, saying that the “guidelines and consensus” could be deemed as interpretation of the guidelines to the grass-roots doctors and make the grassroots work credible with more evidence support. Participants all said that the wide-coverage cases and the rational diagnosis and treatment logic showed the strength of excellent breast centers in China and could serve as good templates for the diagnosis and treatment of breast diseases. Members of the Multidisciplinary Joint Committee on Breast Diseases of Shandong Provincial Medical Association also noted that they have benefited a lot from these lectures rich in content and thorough analysis of each case from the unique perspective of domestic experts, and would review the video of the lectures later on to get a further and deeper understanding of the content.
Multidisciplinary collaborative diagnosis and treatment, known as a new model of modern medicine actively advocated in the international medical field, can provide comprehensive, whole-process and personalized diagnosis and treatment services for complicated and difficult cases such as malignant tumors. As the second multidisciplinary joint committee established by the Shandong Provincial Medical Association, the Multidisciplinary Joint Committee on Breast Diseases of Shandong Provincial Medical Association, led by Shandong Provincial Medical Association and the president Yu Zhigang, has set up a professional academic platform, and has built a multidisciplinary team of experts, covering all breast-disease related specialties such as internal medicine, surgery, pathological, imaging and radiation therapy, while constantly exploring the multidisciplinary cooperation mechanism at both the hospital and provincial level and inter-hospital and inter-provincial level. Through interaction with experts in Shandong and other provinces, the Committee has held 4 multidisciplinary standardized diagnosis and treatment lecture tours this year at Yantai, Liaocheng, Rizhao and Weihai respectively, with a total audience of over 20,000, and has shared experience and cooperated with many other excellent breast disease MDT teams at home and abroad, including those from Jiangsu and Henan Province. The lecture tour will be held in Qingzhou (known as Yidu in ancient times), Zaozhuang, Dezhou and other cities in the near future, which will play an active role in promoting the standardization of breast cancer diagnosis and treatment in Shandong province. At the same time, the Committee has been actively building scientific research platforms and setting youth funds, with the aim to provide scientific research support for young and middle-aged breast doctors, and reserving excellent young talents for the province.
As the chair unit of the Multidisciplinary Joint Committee on Breast Diseases of Shandong Provincial Medical Association, the Department of Breast Surgery of the Second Hospital of Shandong University has always attached great importance to the multidisciplinary collaborative diagnosis and treatment of breast cancers and other benign and malignant breast diseases. Led by Professor Yu Zhigang, the Department of Breast Surgery has been continuously exploring to establish a MDT team on the breast disease specialty and a diagnosis and treatment model, while constantly enhancing the domestic competitiveness of its surgical diagnosis and treatment. By working together with associate departments in the Hospital, Department of Breast Surgery has made possible the establishment and development of many subspecialties such as internal medicine for breast diseases, breast pathology, breast imaging and breast psychology, and has built the prototype of the breast cancer MDT team of the Hospital. In the future, the Department will continue to strengthen the close collaboration with other associate departments, promoting the establishment of a stable and periodic MDT diagnosis and treatment model for breast diseases, and provide patients with more convenient and high-quality comprehensive diagnosis and treatment services.
