Founded in 2004, the Breast Surgery of the Second Hospital of Shandong University has become a specialty with unique features, distinct academic style, high reputation in and out of China, and made outstanding contributions to the development of breast oncology in China attributing to the persistent efforts of the Department members. The Department was granted with the rights to award the master’s degree and the doctoral degree in 2006 and 2009 respectively and rated as the Key Specialty of Shandong Province in 2014. In 2017, the Transitional Institute of Breast Disease Prevention and Treatment of Shandong University was established. And the Department was rated as the National Key Specialty in 2019.
The Breast Surgery has divisions including outpatient, ward, and operation room for breast diseases, etc.
Medical Members
The Department currently includes 17 members devoted to clinic, teaching and research, including 1 “Taishan Scholar”, 1 “Taishan Youth Scholar”, 1 doctoral supervisor, 2 chief physicians, 3 associate chief physicians, and 1 associate researcher. All Department members have a doctoral or master’s degree.
One of the middle-aged and young doctors in the Department is promoted to associate researcher as an exception and 4 are identified as the Department-level Outstanding Talents. The academic leader and doctoral supervisor are in their prime age with multiple steady research directions and have cultivated 14 doctoral degree and 26 master’s degree candidates.
Clinical Medicine
The Specialty is recognized nationally and internationally at advanced level in breast oncology, and has performed the breast cancer phase I reconstruction, molybdenum target-guided biopsy of slight calcified lesions, sentinel lymph node biopsy, breast-conserving surgery, deep inferior epigastric perforator flap and minimally invasive surgery of benign tumor early in China. It lays emphasis on the comprehensive treatment and full-course management of breast cancer, and ranks domestic leading position in the diagnosis and treatment of breast cancer.
Scientific Research Level
The Breast Surgery has undertaken nearly 20 research projects funded by the National and provincial ministries, with total research grant exceeding RMB 20 million Yuan, published over 100 papers on domestic and international journals, won 3 national, provincial and ministerial awards for science and technology progress, edited or co-edited more than 10 books, demonstrating its strong strength and good conditions in scientific research. The academic leader Prof. Zhigang Yu is a famous general surgical specialist in China, who concurrently serves more than 30 additional positions in international academic organizations and holds over 10 honors and awards including National Health and Family Planning System Advanced Worker.
Academic Exchange and Cooperation
The Breast Surgery has successively dispatched 5 experts to USA and other countries for advanced study, organized and attended many international and domestic academic conferences. It also invites experts from USA and other countries to the hospital for academic exchange, through which, good cooperative relationship is established and academic development is greatly promoted.
